Is there a legit reason to put higher rated memory in lower rated slots.

I.E. Shoving DDR2 1066 memory in a board rated for DDR2 800 ?

Well, I guess the reason for doing that is because you have no other options, other than returning the memory, or getting a new board. The board will just load up the settings for 800MHz from a little chip on the memory, so there won't be any problems.

Yes, there is a point.

A pair of DDR2 800 will have trouble reaching a speed of 1100, while the 1066 will go there easy, and much higher.

Yeah, you will be able to overclock and it will reach it's stock speeds that way.

It will be recognized as 800 depending the ratio of fsb to ram. Then you adjust the ratio of fsb to ram to max it out.
