What would you change? $2k Budget?

I am helping my best friend that I've known for 9 years out with a gaming build and this is what I have come up with so far. He does not need a monitor/OS/keyboard/mouse/speakers/headset.

Get the 780i if you want that chipset because you arent doing DDR3 ram. Take that and put two 640mb dual platters in raid 0. They will be quieter and close to the same speed as the raptor plus you will have a ton more space.

You might also want to consider the 750w corsair as it will leave a little more headroom and i think they are only about 15-20 bucks more.

Maybe not so much on the power upgrade, I think corsair is pretty stable for it's price.

what 640mb platters are you talking about?

he could do ddr3 ram if it is the best upgrade he will get for the money, but I am thinking you are right about that

For starters, don't get a raptor X. Either get plain raptors or get WD6400AAKS. And get two drives and run them in RAID0.

Also, you apparently don't realize that the 790i takes DDR3 ram, not DDR2 =) So either switch to the 780i or switch to DDR3 ram. With the extra $300 you have left I'd get this ram if you can find it in stock anywhere.

I'd definitely get a difference case. Me being me, I'd get the Lian-Li PC-V2010, but I'd at least be on the lookout for the Antec 1200 if you like that look. I'd also get a downdraft cooler (I'm very fond of my Thermalright SI-128 SE, but the new Noctua cooler also looks interesting) instead of a tower-style cooler, although with the behind-the-5.25"-drive-bay fan installed a tower cooler might actually be the better option for optimal case airflow.

I also wouldn't get a Raptor - a pair of 250GB hard drives in RAID 0 and a single 500GB storage drive would be preferable in my opinion.

And I'd definitely get a SATA DVD RW drive instead of an IDE version.

To be quite honest, I'd probably scrap the SLI setup altogether for a more proven chipset like P35, and step up to the Q6700 or Q9450.
