Need a good gaming Micro Atx Mobo

Thread Starter
Hello,

I am going away to colege and my dad says to me...I'll get you a laptop. Now...I realize that laptops are extremely limited in terms of raw gaming power...and I told him would build my own system. He said fine. Now comes the fun stuff!!! I get a $1200 budget and The first thing I think of is a small system for a small dorm...so I chose the Thermaltake VF1000BWs Micro Atx Case (lanbox).

Now my dilema is finding a Micro Atx Motherboard that will be good for gaming. I am not sure where to start looking. Does anyone have some suggestions as to good gaming micro atx boards??

Any and all help is appreciated. Also...if you are interested in helping me select the parts for my system and such just pm me. I am new to the whole making a computer from scratch thing...I have some knowledge but ive never done it. I would like some help with that as well.

Thank you

whats the difference between this and the one you listed above?? Is this better??

also...Im not going to run Vista. I will be running XP so 4GB of RAM is pointless. Shoul I have 2 or 3GB for gaming??

The 8800GTS that was previously listed was a G92 Core and the one you have there is a G80 Core. The G92 Core is much better

Even if you are running XP 32 bit, 4GB of ram is good. What you do is open C:\\boot.ini in notepad and add the switch "/3gb" to the end of the boot line. If you run XP 64bit, then you don't need to do that. If you drop down to only 3gb you will no longer be able to run in dual-channel mode so your ram will end up about 40% slower.

Also, the difference between the card you specified and the other one is that this one has only 96 stream processors (G80 core) and 320MB of ram, while the one I showed you has 128 stream processors (G92 core) and 512MB of ram. So the one I showed you is faster.

As far as the 10,000rpm raptors go, they really aren't worth it. The hard drives I listed are actually faster than the raptors, and they bring a lot more space with them too. Make sure you run them in RAID0 of course!
