The 9800GX2 is already a dual GPU card (SLI on one card), and I can't imagine *any* game it can't run at 1680x1050 (which is the native resolution of a 22" widescreen monitor). ONLY if you get a higher resolution *might* TRI-SLI or Quad-SLI be a beneficial option (but I actually even doubt that). But ok, if you have all that money to spend, then yeah, a 780i board would be more than nice. However, you could save a bundle with a more modest Intel P35 based board.

My advice (if you can afford it):
CPU: Q6600
MoBo: a good nVidia 780i based board
RAM: 4GB of G.Skill DDR2 1066

Good luck.

with one of the 9800GX2? or the two cheaper video cards?

after read reveiws and whatnot all night, i think the 780i seems to be the best for the future upgrading too.

It really depends what your monitor of choice is right now.

If you go 22", I'd personally pick up a single 8800GTS 512MB or 8800GTX, and see how you like it. If that's not enough juice, then get a second one.

In that case, SLI is a must-have.

I'd personally get a pair of 8800GTS 512MB cards, preferably from eVGA, given their 90-day step-up program. There are new nVidia cards on the horizon, and you might want to update using that step-up by the time the new cards come out (which should be in about 2 months...).
