[Project] Megalodon "Cosmos S"

Thread Starter
This is my first log and first LC setup which won't be near as extravagant as others and might take some time to complete due to upcoming stuff but I made the first bit of progress, feel free to comment....

Heres a list of the LC hardware:
D-TEK Fuzion (Had no idea about V2 being released)
D-TEK Fuzion Nozzle Kit
D-TEK Fuzion Pro mount kit
D-TEK Fuzion GFX V2 X2
D5 Vario
Sunbeam Rheobus Extreme
2 Scythe Ultra Kaze 120MMx38MM 3000 RPM (DAMN, these is huge!!)
1 Scythe S-FLEX 120MM x 25MM 1900RPM
Swiftech MCRES (might switch to a bay res or t-line)
PA120.3

Completed

The PC hardware is in my sig, might have a new motherboard by the time this is all finished up. As well I will be adding the GTX's into the loop at some point.

All will be installed in the Cosmos S which will be getting some paint pretty soon. I also have to lightly persuade it for component installation....

I didn't take any pics of the boring parts getting to this point which was case panel removal/masking etc and I am still deciding if I will de-rivet this beast to paint it.
I setup a test loop and ran it around 15 hours, so far with no leaks. I also modified the top case cover to accommodate for three 120MMx38MM fans to cool the rad.

After cutting the plastic cover I ground down the leftover "nubs".

I decided to butcher a few 120MM fans I had to use as a shroud, two of them came with the Cosmos S and are close sided style so I cleaned up the housings and ground the sides to match.

Here they are partially mounted, turned out fairly well, hopefully this rad will be okay for now.

I also had to butcher a couple of the Scythe Kaze's to fit the top panel, even after the fact its still a tight fit. I used side cutters and haven't cleaned them up yet since this is all for test fitting/leak testing and won't be seen at all anyways. (still bugs the crap out of me though)

The Rheobus is blinding! (sorry, bad pic)

There's still alot left to do, hoping I can finish it up before I move

Wow thanks, comparing to the talent displayed in other case mod logs it's quite flattering to have someone subscribe to my first one!
Will definitely keep this updated whenever possible and I am hoping to do a couple of things to add some originality.

Thanks! This will be a pretty drawn out log, I was originally going to post this as just a regular build log but seeing as I have had to modify things right from the start I posted it in the case mods with all the big dawgs....

Here are a couple more pics, nothing special but I am chipping away whenever possible. The most of my wait is for time in the paint booth and not being able to find proper mounting hardware.

In this pic you can see the new cutout for the psu connector. I really dislike the original placement and especially the 24 pin psu extender that comes with the case. I am going to re-route the two power button LED wires as well. I used a 1/4" hole saw to form two holes and joined them using a dremel with cutting disk. I tried to match the lower one as you can see but it still needs a bit of cleanup.

I cut the upper fan grills out as well...

Gawd.

Only If I had the time. I will rebuild my case in 2009. Keep it up.

If you can, mod the power for the touch button directly to your PSU's ATX plug. Looks nicer!

You shouldn't drink and build either... hehe

you did the cable management cuts like I did, two circular cuts (holesaw/drill), joined by dremelling out the part remaining in between

nice

Yes I really want to be rid of that 24 pin psu adapter, it's an eyesore. I found out the hard way you shouldn't drink and build anything requiring dexterity!

Thanks, that worked wickedly for this but I still haven't cleaned up the edges.

For the kind words everyone, I hit a bit of a wall. I had to setup an RMA for my pump yesterday as it started making an awful noise. You could clearly tell it was a bad bearing and it will be replaced fairly soon.
I did manage to get the PA120.3 mounted and figure out what else will need to be changed on the top cover for it to fit though.

Here's a couple pics, I still need some longer fan screws for when the gaskets go in place and top fans are mounted. One other problem I came across is that since the fans are spaced differently on the PA102.3 I will need to ditch the rear 38mm rad fan for a thinner one so the top cover will fit. I also did a test fit using an old motherboard, whichever board I install in this should JUST fit with this rad.
I heard there is a newer version of the Cosmos S being released that supports a PA120.3 without modification...

Update: 06/05/2008-I just got the replacement for my RMA'd pump today. Just waiting for time in the paint booth and various mounting hardware so I can finish this beast off or at least add some updates.

Finally, I have a week off and I am going to focus completely on this project and get it finished by the end of the weekend as long as all goes well. I have a new camera now so the picture quality should be much better.... Oh, and happy shark week!

Still left to do:
Paint the case interior, panels, handles, slot covers and hard drive rack. Mount the pump and res as well as install the GPU blocks that are on the way
I am going to use my existing obsolete hardware for now since I would rather damaged used components than new in case of an accident.

Up to this point my updates have been all about the case but it should get more interesting from here on, please bare with me.

Today I had to run around for parts etc but I managed to finish off the last part of the top cover, I had to do a bit more cutting for the last fan to fit in but it's good to go now. Also got some sleeving done and removed some of the top panel cables that I won't be using like the front audio connectors, firewire and E-Sata cables. Much less clutter now.

Cut the second hole for cable management and did what seemed like endless amounts of filing/dremeling with grinding wheel and sanding to get the edges smooth and uniform. It turned out pretty nice and I won't need c-channel to cover the edges, they are smooth enough to cause no harm to any cables.

Prepped the case for paint using a 3M scuff pad and removed the paneling and fan mount from the side door, I'll be installing a piece of acrylic in place of them tomorrow.

I'm bringing the case by a friends shop tomorrow as well to see if I can get some paint on it sooner than later, might get lucky being that it is all prepped. I might use this iridescent red type color used on Scion's for the interior but I am still contemplating on possibly black. Any thoughts on color? I figure blood red for the loop but I don't know how that will look with iridescent paint and red CC's?
