First timer looking for slight overclock on e6600

Hi guys, I'm a long time PC user looking to do my first ever overclock on my Intel Core 2 Duo e6600 running at 2.4Ghz. I am only looking to do a slight overclock, nothing crazy, lol. CPU has stock heatsink + fan.

System is air cooled, I've got a Thermaltake Soprano case with 3 case fans.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo e6600
GFX: Nvidia 8800GTS (320MB)
Mobo: Gigabyte 965P-DS3P
RAM: 2GB Kingston ValueRAM

I'm looking for a result around 2.6-3Ghz.

I've read a few guides but my BIOS has a tonne of options and some of them I'm not sure if I should leave on automatic (I read that leaving these on auto while increasing the FSB speed could adjust these as well), so hopefully someone has a cheat sheet on hand.

Cheers.

EDIT - Wow, looks like my little mission needs to be aborted. Idle my CPU was running around 35c (I swear this used to be somewhere in the 20's...), I ran Prime95 to see what it was like under load and WOW. CoreTemp readings finally maxed out at 64c after about 5 minutes. When I stopped Prime95 the reading almost immediately dropped down to 50c then steadily dropped down to 30.

I guess there's no room for improvement here?

I cant remember what my stock e6600 multi was, maybe 9x266 ??

and not sure what your RAM mhz is.. im assuming ddr2-800...

so change your FSB to 400 (so your ram is running @ 800mhz in dual chan mode) and your multi to 7, so 7x400 = 2.8

leave your core voltage on auto for now, but if it doesnt POST then find out what its using in the BIOS hardware monitor part, and set your core to 0.5v above that. then again another 0.25 volts untill it posts and boots into windows..
but dont go above 1.5v core...

I read somewhere that I may need to set a few things like PCI-e to manual because adjusting the FSB may affect these things as well.

RAM:
PC2 - 5300 CL5 - DDR2

This means I can adjust at 333mhz unless I upgrade RAM right?

nah dont stress bout changing the pci-e freq...

but yeh, try 8x333 = 2.64

if thats stable in windows, then start pushing your FSB up untill it doesnt post and take it back 10mhz and run a stability test for 6-8 hours..

I tried that but it seems to have chosen something a bit different according to Windows...

Dxdiag says my CPU is running ~3.0Ghz

Here's where it gets a bit weird...

CPU Z gives these results:
Core speed: 1992.1 Mhz
Multiplier: X 6.0

Then it jumps up to:
Core speed: 2656.1 Mhz
Multiplier: X 8.0

It stays there for a few seconds. Core Temp is reading the CPU at 40c idle.
Core Temp also has a different reading for the CPU:
Frequency: 2656.0 Mhz (332.00 X 8.0)

I'm gonna run a Prime95 test and see what happens, I'll probably have to halt it if the temp gets too high.

EDIT- Seems the Multiplier jumps up to 8X under stress, while idle it mainly sits on 6X's. Weird, I thought I turned off the auto CPU stuff in my BIOS =\\

EDIT 2 - Ok, ran Prime95 for 15 mins and it seems sweet and somehow, I'm not sure how the hell this works - Core Temp read my temperature a bit lower than before, it seemed to max out at 55, not bad at all.

So now my question is this: Where to from here? Should I try increasing the clock ratio to 9X's to bump the speed up to 2.9Ghz? Should I keep the ratio at 8X's and increase the clock speed? I think I'll leave the voltage alone and just see how far I can get leaving all the voltages at default.

C1E and Speedstep (EIST) need to be disabled...

I just posted this a day or so ago, so here ya go...

This is from my cheat sheet on my GA 965P-S3...

Not exactly sure if these are correct subcategories of BIOS so you will have to go thru each one and look, but this is for OC'n a C2D

_Advanced Bios_
CPU Hyper Threading - Disable
Limit CPU Max to 3 - Disable
CPU Therm Monitor - Disable
CIA2 - Disable
C1E - Disable
EIST - Disable
Virt Tech - Disable
No Exec Mem - Disable

_PC Health Status_
FAN Speed Control Method - Disable

Highlight over Inteligent Tweaker and press cntrl+F1
this enables hidden features

CPU Host Clock Control - Enable
PCIE Freq - 100
Set mem multiplier to 2
Set DRAM to Manual
set timings to its default (4-4-4-15/5-5-5-18)

Default mem voltage is 1.8 so add whats needed there

vcore should be set to about 1.325 for 3.0 and all other aside from mem should be auto. But try upping in intervals of 10..

Good Luck

Hope this helps..
