Beginner OC'r Needs help

post #1 of 22
Thread Starter
Hello,
I've read couple of guides for overclocking... but now I need some help.

I got a asus P5K motherboard with an intel E6600 C2D processor @2.4Ghz, ddr2-800mHz

My FSB frequency is 350
Multiplier: 9.0
ram = 1:1

Current OC:
Frequency = 3.15Ghz
Ram = 701Mhz

Im not sure about the timings of my ram, was doubting about some settings:
Cas# latancy = 5dram clocks
Ras# to cas# delay = 5dram clocks
Ras# pre time = 5dram clocks
Ras# act time = 15 dram clocks
Ras# to Ras# delay = 10
REF cycle time = auto (36)
Write recovery time = 6
Write to read delay = 10
Read to pre time = 10

I have not touched the voltage settings, but cpu voltage is set on auto but I don't know the given voltage of it.

I have a zalman cpu cooler,
I'd liked to know if the ram settings are good, or can be better, and how I can overclock with the voltages.

your RAM timings are ok. its generally best to OC your processor first and then tweak the RAM timings. sometimes you're able to get them down a little.

No, that is NOT solid. A solid overclock is AT LEAST 8 hours Orthos blended stable. Heck, I've seen it fail after 15 hours of running.

If you want an overclock to be stable, DO NOT stress test for only 30 minutes. You want it to be AT LEAST 8 hours stable, with 12+ hours being preferred . I'm kind of a stability nut myself, I stress test for 24+ hours...just to be on the safe side.

I booted succesfully, Im not gonna test it, if it works,
Can I overclock higher then 350, at 360 he fails the tests,
Do i have to change the voltage settings cause it's on auto, and i've read that it will produce to much heat?

I want to say, thank you all for helping me,
Really good community!

The ONLY way you are going to get a decent overclock is to raise the vcore. You can take that 65nm chip up to 1.5v. But do it slowly. And try to settle for less. A little vcore, a little FSB. back and forth and you'll get there

i dont doubt that the community regards 8 hours at least stable but unless u plan on stressing the cores @100% 24 hrs a day 30mins is fine for general use & gaming IMO
none of my OCs have failed on my machines & im a heavy gamer....priority 8 will show errors in the first few minutes

but hey if it goes 30mins @ priority 8 i bet it will go 8 hours flawlessly

pioneerisloud is right though to be able to ''claim'' a solid OC 24 hrs is the standard
