[videogamer.com] LucasArts: 'We're not shutting the door on PC'

LucasArts is "not shutting the door on PC", despite the lack of a PC version of upcoming Star Wars game The Force Unleashed.

Speaking in an interview with VideoGamer.com last week, Cameron Suey, producer of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of The Force Unleashed, said that LucasArts wasn't doing a PC version of one of the most anticipated Star Wars games in years because of the vast differences in power of PCs in people's homes.

He said: "The PC being the gaming platform that it is, someone with a $4,000 high-end system would definitely be able to play the Euphoria, the DMM and really technical elements of the game. But someone with a low-end PC would have a watered down experience, they would have to turn all the settings down and it wouldn't be the same game.

"On the other hand if we made that game for as many people as possible, because we are trying to make mass market games, something that everybody can enjoy, well then it's not taking advantage of what those $4,000 systems can do. So one way or the other depending on how you build that lead PC SKU, it's not going to be for the same amount of people, it's going to be not as good or only for a select few people. No matter where you pick that bar somebody's out of luck."

Many PC owners have expressed their disappointment with LucasArts' decision, especially given its rich heritage on the platform. Some of what is generally agreed to be LucasArts' best work was released exclusively on the PC, including the early 90's classic point and click adventures and various previous Star Wars games.

However, Suey moved to reassure its PC-owning fans that it wasn't abandoning them.

"That said we're definitely not out of the PC market," he told VideoGamer.com. "It's just with our choice for this game, with the known quantity for the consoles, and every console is the same with the same processing power, it made sense for us to develop for those consoles."

Asked if he had any message to PC owners, Suey replied: "The message is that we're not shutting the door on PC at all. Just for this project it happens to be that we don't have a PC SKU. I really hope that everyone can experience this game on a platform eventually."

You can check out the full interview with Cameron Suey right here. When you're done with that, head over to our Star Wars: The Force Unleashed game page where you'll find all our coverage of the upcoming game.

I am sure we can all laugh in unison at the idea that people will need a $4000 dollar PC to enjoy a game made for $300 consoles. The idea is simply ridiculous, and to fathom that these people use PCs for development and are able to utter such clueless statements with a straight face.. I'm not sure what's doing it, if it's all the dollars they get from the console manufacturers or if they've just bought that much into all the PC gaming is dying FUD the console manufacturers are spreading.

It's also funny how a watered-down version of this game is being made for the DS and PSP, yet we on our 'inferior' PCs are not allowed to enjoy this 'watered down' experience that we are said we would get (nevermind that every single console port from the so-called 'next gen' consoles so far have run better and looked better on any reasonably new mid-end PC).

Eventually, ha-ha. I can assure you, while calling you names I will not type on this forum, I am not buying a single half-baked PC port from you people. Not after these statements. Not after you issued a press release about a PC version of The Force Unleashed as an APRIL FOOLS JOKE. Clearly you have absolutely no respect for your 'PC fans' (do you have any left?), and you certainly won't get any of my money. Your games are not even worth the hard drive space and bandwidth I'd have to waste pirating them.

Sounds like crap to me. I really doubt that I'll be purchasing anything from that developer again. If it has Lucas's name on it, it'll be left on the stand. The last GOOD game for the PC that Lucas has produced was the X-wing/Tie Fighter sims. And guess what, that was QUITE a while ago. The ports that they have for the console games are 1/2 assed, at best. And I'm not buying a console just to "experience" this game. sounds like a load of crap to me!!

Though i'm not near as mad about this as you apparently are...it's a good article and I was looking forward to the force unleashed on PC, so this sucks....and I agree with your statements about them not giving a ****.
They are just looking to make the most money as usual.

I personally don't believe any of what he has to say. PC has a higher level of quality at the high end and at the low end is just below consoles. Considering the PS3 cannot even do anti-aliasing (on GT5 at least), then I would say consoles don't provide that much more of an experience.
Just sounds like someone is thinking with their wallets and not their heads. Maybe one day there will be a huge move back to PC- all of us here will get the last laugh on that one.

It's just that we get pounded over and over, despite PC gaming being alive and well, thriving even, and digital distribution taking off like it is. It's all of this completely unfounded 'PC gaming is dying' BS that is spread around like cow manure on the field when it's utter drivel! All the time! I feel like Jen Hsun Huang here, except I'm not losing money, just my mind.

""That said we're definitely not out of the PC market," he told VideoGamer.com. "It's just with our choice for this game"

since this is the only game they're making this year, and its probably the biggest release in the past 5 years from them, its pretty safe to say thats a lie..

And put Full Throttle on Cartoon Network, have to hire Timm Schafer to consult and write. And I'm annoyed at this too. I have ZERO intention of buying a console, and a Star Wars game, however cool, won't change that.

Still would have been cool on a PC with modded Wiimote drivers.
