Disabling 2D Mode with 2900XT?

Thread Starter
As I understand it, while in the windows desktop and what's not the 2900XT runs at the 2D mode of 500/515. I would like to have the video card never leave 3D mode, with my overclocked settings of 850/1000. The reason for this is I do a lot of fairly graphically intense desktop work with a lot of windows open at the same time. Everything would run smoother if I could get it to stay in 3D mode.

I can't of course just set the 2D mode clocks to 850/1000 because I believe the card is supplied less voltage while in the lower power mode, which makes sense, but doesn't give me the headroom I need to OC it. Anyone have any ideas?

It should be the same as in Vista x64, if you know how to do that.

I'm curious what "graphically intense desktop work" would mean where a video card of that nature in 2D is too slow?

Are you sure it's not caused by a CPU bottleneck?

When you launch ATITool it forces 3D mode, and stays like that until you close it. Other than manually editing the BIOS, I can't think of another way to disable 2D mode.

I'm fairly certain. A quick glimps of the CPU usage during these choppy situations reaffirms this. It's animations mostly.

For starters I'm in Photoshop the entire day, which does have hardware acceleration. I use an Objectdock for task management, which gets large and is hardware accelerated, and I use an Expose clone for window management (that Vista window switching thing is utterly useless). Throw in several browser windows, emails, Dreamweaver, Aptana, SFTP, PS, etc. It gets choppier than it should be.

Does that work in Vista x64 / Server 2008 x64?

Yes.

I would have recommended more RAM... but you already have your 8GB....

Or you can use rivatuner to startup on windows. I think it's better then atitool.

I get this:

Followed by this:

Which upon clicking yes to, reboots and does the same thing.

Also, ATITool tells me something about kernel mode not running.
