Worth overclocking ?

Thread Starter
Alright so i like to play BF2... i play on 1280x1024 with Display settings forced to 8x aa and 16x af...
but sometimes it gets a lil low fps.

AMD 3800+ 939 socket (single core)..
asus a8n-sli deluxe
XFX Nvidia 7900 GT Extreme (256-PCI-e)
3gb of ram ddr1

windows xp pro sp2..

i was wondering what would make my PC better?
some tell me that overclocking my CPU wont do much.. ill have to overclock the video card..

etc.

so i decided to come to the best place for advice. ..

is it worth overclocking ?

if yes.. what should i look into overclocking?

If you have the money to buy a new CPU I would go for that upgrade, then OC both the cpu and gpu. Opterons are great chips that usually OC pretty well if you get a good stepping. If you don't have the money for the upgrade then I would suggest OC'ing it all, the ram, cpu, and gpu. It might not make a huge differance but it will make some.

Nick, overclocking would most certainly bring a performance increase to your system so there is no doubt about that. If this is your first time venturing into Ocing then I'd recommend reading over a few guides. These are extremely helpful and should shed some light on most of your questions: (these should be S939 related)

http://www.overclock.net/amd-general...ing-guide.html

Let us know if you have any more questions. I'm sure others will chime in soon with more suggestions too.

Good luck

A CPU overclock would definately help overall performance. There are tons of threads about overclocking, you really shouldn't be on the forum if you don't plan to overclock everything anyway. jk Good luck with your OC(s)

Nick, for $300 you could easily purchase a brand new board, processor and memory (AM2+) or if you'd prefer Intel I'm sure a E21xx and a P35 chipset can be had for the same price. There's a quite a few options you could go with but it's up to you

Good luck

Yes I would personally say the first thing to upgrade would be the CPU. Before looking on ebay and the egg, I would suggest looking around in our For Sale threads and see if anyone has one up for sale. I have never dealt with the Opty185's before, so I don't know how good they are compaired to the other Opterons. I know that both our Opty's have both hit 3.0GHz(mine wasn't stable it was just a quick suicide with diff ram, but I am stable at 2.8GHz) I would suggest to go take a look at this thread and maybe joining with a screenshot or CPUz link.

There is no reason to buy a 185 if you are going to overclock. Try to find a Opty 165 or so with a good stepping because most of the Opty will hit a limit at 3ghz anyway.

For 300 bucks, you can easily get an Opty and a 8800gt(I wouldn't recommended anything better as you might be bottlenecked by your CPU)

with your current Resolution of 1280 by 1024, the above combo can easily max out most of the current games.

If you are willing to spend $300 you can easily get a new dual core cpu, motherboard and some memory. Then sell what you have now on ebay, get some more money and maybe upgrade from there. If you just want to buy a cpu, then yeah go with the opteron, and get a video card too. But your cpu can hold your video card back just a bit. So sometimes upgrading the cpu may be all you need.
