Worth overclocking ? - Page 2

Nick, I just dropped an opteron180 in my system as my last/final upgrade to my 939 system.. It made a world of difference from my 4600 that was a dog.. It went right to 2.84 on 1.45v... Newegg only had then in stock for a week or 2 then they disappeared.. As mentioned above you might wanna consider a whole new platform (board, ram, cpu) as 939 parts are becoming scarce and expensive.. But you do have a decent board and 3 gb of DDr ram so it would still be feasible (and probably cheaper) to drop a new Opty 165 up to 185 in your system.. You can still get them new online if you look around and def look at all the for sale sections of these forums.. Theres still quite a few ppl selling great stepping opty's at a decent price.. Gl with it..

Nick, if I was in your shoes I would attempt to overclock the processor to see how far I could take it. If I'm successful then I would use that $300 and purchase a new video card. An ATI 3870 or 8800GT can be purchase for under $200 now.

Good luck

Opteron 185 for $280!! That's just too expensive. Have you checked the For Sale section to see if anyone is selling Opterons?

Nick, check out my first post in this thread. I included some guides that you might want to go over. I'd recommend overclocking through the BIOS.

Good luck

If you are asking which way to OC the CPU, the best way is ALWAYS bios. I have seen several people say that you should only use software when OCing gpu, otherwise bios is the way to go. I don't know from personal experience because I have never OC'd with software, so I don't know how well it works, but thats just my opinion from what I have seen on here.

Nick, just start raising the HTT incrementally by 5mhz or 10mhz. Test for stability using Orthos/OCCT. Make sure to drop your memory divider so your memory frequency doesn't get in the way. You can always test the memory later on. Those two guides should explain everything. Make sure to keep your eyes on your temps when you start playing with the voltages.

Every processor is different and there is no guarantee's to overclocking

Good luck
