Is there a quick overclock for Q6600?

post #1 of 23
Thread Starter
I'm asking because I'm getting ready to put together a Q6600, DFI DK P35, 2x1GB GSkill HZ machine for my dad. He does CAD work. He'll be running a GeForce 6800 XT (ew, I know). Don't tell me about the bottleneck, I already know and have TRIED to convince him he needs a better card. He's just worried about getting it up and running 100%. Anyways!

Stock speeds of this thing are as follows (if I'm not mistaken)
266x9 = 2.40GHz
RAM @ 400MHz (5-5-5-15 if I'm not mistaken)
Voltage????

What I'm wondering would be if the following would be easy enough to assume possible and stable:
333x9 = 3.0GHz
RAM @ 400MHz (stock timings, just adjust divider to keep stock speed)
Voltage at whatever it is stock.

The CPU was just bought off newegg last week. Would it be safe enough to assume this would work out fine? I know, I know....gotta test it and all that. I've never overclocked an LGA775....and my dad WILL NOT allow me to do so. However I'm going to do it anyway if this is easy enough to hit 3.0GHz with stock volts as there's no point to wasting a quad! He'll be running stock cooler as well.

Well, what do you quad owners think? Is 3.0GHz achieveable with stock volts and stock cooler? I'm assuming since there already is 333MHz FSB CPU's out there, the proper RAM divider would put the RAM right to stock speeds. I'm only wanting to overclock the CPU on this thing, and only as far as stock cooling allows (which I would assume to be stock volts). Ideas?

I'd also like to point out, the parts have arrived, but he's not ready for me to build it yet...he said he'll call me when he's ready. He's kinda feeling sick lately.

EDIT:
Quad core is installed and stressing as we speak. So far its 3 hours Prime95 blended stable at 333 x 9 at 1.23v. Will update with pics if needed once its done. This is on STOCK COOLING! I think this may be a golden chip.

you may or may not be able to use stock volts depending on what VID you get, but your board is most likely set at auto so it will adjust the volts for you. this is often too high for what you really need, so you may want to test it to see (make sure to run orthos or occt or prime95 4 instances for at least a few hours, your best bet is to see if its stable for 24 hours and then you can be sure)

Using the stock cooler at 3.0 you might hit some higher temps but i think it would still be fine. Just keep it under 72C. Try to get the best thermal interface you can. Ideally you should upgrade the cooler, because the excess heat is more damaging than a couple of millivolts.

Well see, there's my problem. My dad doesn't understand this. He also doesn't understand what a HUGE BOTTLENECK his 256MB 6800 XT is going to be for that thing. But hey, its not my money . I'm still trying to convince him to go with AT LEAST an 8600GT (8800GS being preferred minimum), and a decent cooler. But that'll have to wait until he decides to do so. I've told him time, and time again how horribly bottlenecked it is....but I just can't get it through his head.

Basically, I'm just wanting to see some more GHz out of that quad core because I know it can be done. I'm setting up folding on it with my username whether he likes it or not...so I might as well get it up as fast as I can. But its gotta be quick and easy. A 24 hour Orthos run WILL be done...but I can't sit there and tinker with settings. Like I said, I've got to be able to just adjust a few things (FSB mainly), boot up, and run Orthos for a day (to ease MY mind).

All I'm really worried about is just a nice SIMPLE easy to achieve overclock on the processor ONLY, with stock cooling. Should be easy, right?

you should be fine with just moving the fsb to hit 3.0. if anything you might have to bump up the vcore a notch or 2 but that should be it, no more than that. you already know about the temps, but you should be fine, alittle on the warm side, but fine none the less.

Since this is a workstation, I would keep it to a light 2.6-2.8 ghz.

Since this absolutely needs to work, run orthos for 48 hours (CPU only for 48, then CPU and memory for 48), and memtest for 10-15 pass's at least.

If he leaves for a weekend or you get a while, then sure try 3.0 on 1.35 volts. Just make sure it can pass the very difficult above test.

If you want to get him to test the waters with a better video card, talk with him and just have him use your card for a day (after of course you set it up the night before and make sure its working and does not cut into his productivity).

So the quad core has been stressing for the last 3 hours at 3.0GHz with only 1.23v. So I decided I should tell it a bedtime story of how its going to grow up to be a world famous overclocker and hit 4.0GHz and bring me to some Intel glory (haven't seen that yet).

Seriously though!
3.0GHz with 1.23v!!!! That has GOT to be an achievement, no? I honestly and truly in my heart can see 4.0GHz in this chip's future. If I'm ever able to buy myself a Quad core rig....I'm switching my dad CPU's whether he likes it or not. He won't use this even at stock!

So stay tuned fellow overclockers. I'm ordering a new cooler and a pretty and shiny new 9600GT for this rig (hopefully) tomorrow. We'll see just how high this baby can clock!

Nice.

A note about the video card... does your dad game at all? if not, then who cares.
