Well, he knows all...I'll start off by saying that much.
He's going to be upgrading his CAD software in roughly 6 months..maybe a year or so (I know, that a long ways for a computer). Currently his old rig did him fine (Pentium D 2.8, 1GB DDR2, 6800XT)...but he wanted something more powerful. So I told him that a Quad core would be the BEST option for doing what he does...CAD work, multitasking, etc. 2GB of RAM is a MUST these days (we all know that). Now here's where his smart ideas come in.
I told him flat out that his old card would do him fine, if he was fine with his old machine. But I did inform him that it would be silly (from a gamer's point of view mind you) to keep the 6800 in that machine...considering what it is. He said, "Well what I'm doing IS
graphically intensive, so I should need a top of the line video card to match my top of the line computer, no?". So I said, "Sure!!!" Lol...he's EXTREMELY thickheaded. He just has to beat my machine, that's all there is to it. He's perfectly fine and content on his old Athlon64 3000+ laptop doing his CAD work RIGHT NOW
I know that all he's doing is trying to outdo my machine. He saw pictures of it online the other day (I had to show off my new video card to him)...but I figure the upgrade couldn't hurt anything either. It will help future proof his machine even further than it already is. I figure its money well spent on something that he may never use, lol. But at least he has the bragging rights again right now. I have a feeling that's all he's after...even though I'm the one that suggested all these parts and even built it.
He's pretty much just flexing his wallet. He does this with EVERY machine I've built the last few years. His Pentium D, 1GB DDR2, 6800 XT....was to outdo my Socket A rig....which outdid HIS old Dell P4 rig. Its just a never ending circle here.
