The new Asus Eee PC 900 is now available for order at Amazon.com. The online retail giant has a price set at around $550 - $580, depending on specs.

The "Eee" brand has made waves with its light-weight design, reliance on solid-state drive memory and a Linux operating system.

The 900, a second generation version of the Eee PC, features a larger 8.9-inch wide screen capable of displaying 1024 by 600 pixels and dual solid-state drives capable of storing 12 GB in Windows XP and 20 GB in Linux.

Available in either Pearl White or Black, the computer will also feature a new FingerGlide touchpad that can recognize two finger gestures for zooming and scrolling.

The 900 also features a 900 MHz Celeron M CPU from Intel, a UMA graphics chipset, one gigabyte of DDR2 RAM, and built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi.

No more ugly black borders around the screen!

For that much I'd just get a real laptop...true it would be 5-6" bigger, but it would probably be worth it for the computing power.

I sold my EEE PC 4G Surf to upgrade to this but now I am looking at the HP tx2000z tablet since a tablet would be more useful to me. I loved my 4G for its size and was surprising powerful enough for most h264 videos I had. The bigger screen and multi-touch tracker are really nice improvements. Everyone that saw it in person instantly wanted one.

I...still don't understand this. Okay, the assumption that it was made as a small, lightweight, affordable portable PC for poorer areas is fine. But it's nearly $600? I understand the tech that went into it isn't cheap, but that's not a good deal for what you get. I guess it's just my opinion, but why spend the money on this unless you have lots of extra dough? And if you have extra dough, you might as well just buy a high-end ultra-portable REAL notebook... just my $0.02...

!@$!@$!!!!! It's not always about power!!!

When you're getting a computer for playing music, word processing, web browsing and emailing, what the crap do you need a C2D and 4GB of RAM for, even if it's the same price????

The POINT is the form factor. YES, you CAN get a more powerful computer for the same price. But NO, you CANNOT get a more powerful computer the same size for the same price. THAT is the point! Yoink!
I agree with The Hundred Gunner, most other laptops that size cost about 4 times as much. Sure you do get a far more powerful laptop for that, but if all you want is a small laptop that lets you do word processing, listen to some music, surf the web/read email. Then you don't need anything more powerful.

It's the reason I'm thinking of getting one.
