8 gigs of RAM even needed?

Thread Starter
In building and pricing out my new setup up i see times have changed to where 8gigs of memory is being applied. But is it really going to be utilized right now? or would 4gig(2x2) for overclocking do me just fine?

thanks

In all probability 4GiB will be more than enough.

Currently, unless you're doing 3d modeling or advanced video editing, you don't need 8GB of RAM. 4GB is enough.

But RAM is dirt cheap nowadays, so it wouldn't hurt... You could turn off your pagefile if you did buy 8GB.

I have used 8GB(Stole a friends 4GB ) and 4GB in my current build and I can't tell the difference in Vista Ultimate x64.

As far as I know, 32 bit operating systems can't detect more than 4 gb of RAM... and most versions of Windows will show even 4 gb as anywhere between 2.75 and 3.5 due to different components like PCI and PCI-e cards taking up address space... you can Google it for a better explanation. So basically 8 gb would almost NEVER be needed. Hope that helps!

I would go 2x2g (oh wait, I did!) and if you ever think you need more, get it then.
8 gigs of RAM is just e-peen for 95% of those that have it.

x86 systems can only use 4 gigs max, part of which is taken by video and such.
x64 systems can use terabytes (but due to Microsofts wisdom, only 8 gigs for Vista Basic, 16 gigs for Premium, and 128 gigs for Ultimate, software limit, not hardware).

He's right on the 32 bit os, but if you are building a new rig, i suggest you go with 64bit vista. Vista Home basic is limited to 8, HP to16, and everything else goes up to 128 gig. If this is the last upgrade for a while go for the 8, but if you plan on going to ddr3 anytime soon stick with 4.
