Resizing partition with Ubuntu on Dual Boot machine

Thread Starter
OK, I installed Ubuntu on my laptop running dual boot with XP.
Only problem is I apparently got my partition sizes mixed up and set my windows for 10gb and Ubuntu for 20, and I need it the other way around. I can't even defrag windows since I am @ 9.25gb right now (well, I can, but I moved 2 gigs of music to a flash drive).

Do I need the disk to do this, or can it be done from within Ubuntu?

On another note, I can not see the Ubuntu partition from Windows (not sure about seeing the Windows from Ubuntu, guess I could switch and see). Is this normal?
If I could, I could keep my music on the Ubuntu partition and access the music from there.

I'm not sure about what you can do regarding the mix up on the partitions... Is it possible that you can put everything on an external drive and repartition?

Also, windows cannot see anything but windows filesystems. Windows thinks it's the only OS in the world. There might be 3rd party software/drivers that allows you to do it, though.

Both installs of XP and Ubuntu are pretty fresh, so even if I had to completly start over, it would not be a big deal. If I could just re-size the partitions though, that would be easier (although I have been thinking of going back to Windows 2000 on this laptop, it is so much faster with that).

I feel kinda dumb for giving this idea, but you might be able to defrag if you move the files to an external HDD then delete them on your internal. Then you could use a partitioning utility to resize and finally put everything back where it belongs.

you can use Acronis Disk Director Suite.

You can use it to do anything you want to your hard disk without destroying data.

One way to do it would be Using a Gparted Live Cd.

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/

Go there and Download the iso, then burn it onto a cd,and boot up the live cd,make sure your boot order is correct.

After you get Gparted started up,u will see both partitions listed, then simple "Resize partitions"

No need for any fresh installs.

And the reason Xp cant see the Ubuntu partitions is because, like XP, Ubuntu also has security measures, you will not see Ubuntu until you set it to "visible to all" or something of that sort.

Hope that helps.

OK, I will try that. I guess I could run that from a thumb drive? I don't have any blank disks at work.

I will look around for the security settings for that also.

Thanks

Well, apparently my computer will not boot from the thumb drive (followed the directions on the link above).
I just finished it. Guess it will have to wait till I get home.
Thanks.
