Is it necisary for me to cool my mosfets? I think my new thing is causing a short! Will it hurt it if I run it without one for a while??

If you want to get the most out of your memory clocks then yes. you'll need to. But it isn't absolutely needed.

Aftermarket cooling isn't always necessary, but I'm not sure if I would run without any heatsinks at all... I know overheating MOSFETs can cause voltage problems and burn out ram pretty easily... the 680i boards supposedly have problems with that pretty frequently. So I'm not sure if your "new thing" is an aftermarket cooler or what, but try putting the stock ones back on and see if the problem fixes itself.

Just remove the heat pipes on the stock heat sinks and put them back on, a lot easier than spending $35 on a set of Swiftech sinks.
