HD Video/Audio for Quicktime/Mac?

Thread Starter
I'm trying to watch high-def content on my mbp, but the quicktime that I've got installed right now (just downloaded the new version but waiting to restart until the wife closes out her art and Photoshop stuff) can't play back the HD content. I've tried searching around but knew that the forum would be an easier (and faster, no doubt!) place to look. Any ideas? I know that ffdshow for Windows works great on high-def content, but since I've got OSX... Oh, and I'd like to stay free (if possible, but I know how Apple apps are...).

What do you mean that QT can't play HD? As soon as you try to load something with a resolution better than 720x480 it tells you it won't play it or something?

Well, to be more clear (I realize now I wasn't), the video works (works amazingly well, actually), but I have no audio... So, I'm not sure if I need a new video codec or a plug-in for the audio. By the way, I found the link for Mira and it looks good, if you want to pay (I'm stingy - though I have a mac, so...I guess I'm a hypocrite).

It would REALLY, REALLY help if you told us what kind of file you're dealing with, and what codecs were used.

Take a look at Perian. It's an app that installs to the preferences pane. It enabled audio for AVI files in QT for me, and it's supposed to do work with many more different kinds of codecs that QT doesn't support by default.

Codecs have nothing to do with HD?
If the video is Xvid (for example) then thats just how the video was compressed. You'd still need the proper codec but it could still be any resolution.

Download the Mac version of VLC Player, it plays everything.

The codecs have nothing to do with the content being HD, but it will affect the ability to play back or not.

Try playing a FRAPS-captured video on Linux or OSX. You'll see what I mean.

I'm sure that the problem can be solved with Perian.

It's an .avi at 720, so Perian should work for the audio plug-in. The Mac website was no help with any of the plug-in information for HD. The thing I'm not really understanding is why QT natively played the video for the .avi, but gave no idea (and the cryptic pop-up didn't really help much either - "Other software may be required to accurately play this type of file) what the problem would be. Just for edification, does QT natively play HD video but not necessarily audio? Or is it just that I happened to have the right plug-ins for the video, but not audio? Either way, it would seem logical that both would be natively supported by Apple with QT (atleast, it makes sense in my twisted world).

I'll download the VLC for Mac also, but I'm thinking that what Gunner suggested should work. Thanks Gunner.

QT just doesn't have the codecs to play audio from .AVIs. I have no idea why; that's just the way it is. Perian did it for me; it should work for you as well.
