Amd 3800+

Thread Starter
Ok so I recently upgraded from an old 2.1 single core to a 2.0 dual. (wow, faster) So this thing Idles at about 38-40 C and at full load about 56-58 C. I use standard air cooling, and I don't really have any cash to go water or anything. I was looking through the bois and I found that I can only adjust the voltages to my cpu? I couldn't find anything about changing the core. I have this program, warpspeeder, and it can only go so far without messing up. ( i got it to 2.1 and then it locked up)
My goal is to get this to 2.4 stable, maybe 2.6 pushing my luck.
how do I continue

Do you have the stock CPU cooler? What voltage adjustments do you have thru your bios? You might be limited on the motherboard on how high you can go.

First, we need to know exactly what motherboard you are using.
Look at my rig, for example, it's a socket 939, but it's an Asus A8N-E. That gives us more information to look at for what you can do.

On air, 2.4 on that chip is very easy. I'm running mine at 2.4 right now with air cooling. Granted, I'm using an non-stock heatsink/fan. That's the first thing you need to replace, is that heatsink & fan if you are running stock. I have temps that are 38 idle/44 load with my setup. And that's WITHOUT voltage increase!

Give more specific information about the rig you are working with (manufacture/model of parts) and we can help more.

Iidx, would you happen to know if your 3800+ X2 is a Manchester or a Toledo core? I'm assuming Manchester since 3800+ Toledo's were rare. The Manchester core is voltage hungry when you start to get up to 2.7-2.8Ghz. The stock cooler may not cut it for those values.
To check the core name and other settings try giving CPU-Z a shot. You can download that by going here: http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz_145.zip

Let us know

Good luck

Is your specific motherboard the Biostar GeForce 6100-939/M9?

I reread your original post, and I'm afraid I'm not quite sure what you mean. I used to have a Biostar GeForce 6100-939, and if I remember correctly it did allow changes to VCore (Core Voltage/CPU Voltage). But that was a while ago, so I'm no longer sure.

Yes, thats right
when I go into the bios, I can increase the voltage the slightest bit.
maybe I need to update my bois? the version I have now are from 2006

Yeah I'm running on the stock heatsink/fan.

if you want to mess around with voltages i would seriously suggest upgrading your cooler. Something like a tuniq tower would be fine...there about $40 so not that bad...
you shouldnt need to up the voltage to get to 2.1. Chances are you can get to 2.4 without much of an increase, but im not too familiar with the s939 chips so..

either way, if your bios has no hard-overclocking options, overclocking WILL be difficult on that board. Being able to up the voltage is a nice touch, but if you use software you could really bork your installation of windows so be careful.
