The reason you have that adware is to subsidize the price. That's why you got the laptop at the price you got it at. If you dodge that, then you're circumventing the discount they gave you - you got that price at... a price, for lack of a better word.

So basically, no, you aren't legally allowed to do this. You can manually remove the adware if you like, but to use a whole different version of windows OEM with a whole different key is pirating.
ahhh good answer. so i wont do it.

Then explain why I can still use the cd keys I got from gateway and dell computers on all my other builds even when using a completely different CD.

Not true, you can use any media center disk downloaded or borrowed to install with your original key, on the original machine. It is perfectly legit. You own that key. It is not legal to try and use that key on another machine.

You don't have to use a specially made copy for certain brands. The disc they give you have drivers that are specially designed for the computer but a OEM copy of windows will work with the product key as long as it's legit. If you are worried about the legality of it you can always try and get an official oem disk from ebay. I know a lot of computer repairmen just use oem disks to reinstall os if the customer doesn't have the original backup copy but often times certain hardware designed for Media Center will not function properly even after dling the latest drivers from the manufacturer. I'd personally just erase all the adware if you were wanting to make sure the functionality of the computer will be the same.

Yes it is.

Downloading a copy is never legal unless you made the copy yourself.

The keys are licenses....when you pay all that money you pay for a license to use that software on your computer. You already paid for a license for that laptop, so you can use that key for any actual disk you use to install it on the laptop.
Its illegal to download a copy, even if you own the key.

No you cannot.

Not true at all, unless HE made those copies.

---

Its illegal you cannot download something even if you own it. Its illegal because YOU did not make the backup, someone else did.

I'm 100% sure on this.

Now if you had a disc of the OS then it would be legal, however downloading it is not, even if you have a key.

OK I just looked around MS, I see no way to download a backup copy, you have to pay to download. I have used my own disk to reinstall on quite a few PCs where the owner lost the restore disks and used their Key. I have never had a problem activating that way.

Basically, the install on your computer would be legal (if you dl'ed an OEM disk from HP), but downloading the disk itself isn't legal to do.
