Hello all-

i am sure some of you have read my earlier posts about overclocking my quad.

well i did, and increased my 3dmark score from 12k to 17k with the 2.4 to 3.4 jump.

however, gaming has not improved. frames remain the same, if not worse

i playgames like crysis, and some RTS like Company of heros, plus a little empire building action with MTW2 and Sins of a solar empire.

you would think with a 5k jump in a 3dmark score i would see some improvement!!! but in all honesty, not a single game has improved in performance, in fact, i have noticed a decrease in performance marked by artifacting and low frame rate. this happens even at 3.2 and 3.0 clocks.

is there a magical button i need to press somewhere to take the ball and chain off my system? because i dont know what else to do.

HEAT- 43 IDLE 50 LOAD
Drivers- 175.16

can anyone help meh? plz?

The games you play are likely GPU bound, so a CPU overclock won't help you. 3DMark06 is a poor benchmark in that regard, since it puts a lot of emphasis on CPU performance.

All the fables about CPU being a bottleneck is nonsense... yes, in 3DMark it is, but in games... no way.

Overclock your GPUs, and you'll see improvements... CPU overclock... maybe when your GPUs catch up.

I second that

When games are GPU bound you be better of with highend card and I see you got two.

Here´s a little example.

Done with Crysis Benchmark Tool and Everest 4.50.1355 b on my Rampage Rig

266 9 2,4, 800 5-5-5-15 PL5

Read 6538
Write 5693
Copy 5928
Lat 76,3

1280x960 Low Q 0xAA 78,63 fps
1600x1200 High Q 0xAA 28,57 fps

475 8 3,8, 1266 5-5-5-15 PL7

Read 10351
Write 10105
Copy 10247
Lat 49,1

1280x960 Low Q 0xAA 119,75 fps
1600x1200 High Q 0xAA 28,42 fps

It´s not a noticeable difference with high resulotion and high quality even thou we have FSB 266 and 2,4 up to FSB 450 and 3,8 but with low resulotion and low quality there is.

I have showed similary example to folks and recommed then (if they game) to put there money on a better grahpics card then on mobo, CPU and memory.

So going with for example E8400, 800 5-5-5 and a high end grahpics card with out OC is good enough as it is.

But if you OC your system you got for example, a more responsive and snappier system and your loading times for games gets shorter and don´t forget, the wellbeing of how good your are OC your system.

Runing Crysis in 1680x1050 or higher with High Q or higher, we just have to wait for the grahpics card to catch up, nothing else we can do.

Don´t be sad, you have good system, not everyone have two 8899GTX.

Yep, fire up rivatuner and raise your core and memory just a bit I bet you will see a large improvement.

And dont use crysis as a base either, its ridiculas haow system hungry it really is, Ive gained 20-50 FPS accross the board in all games and in 3DMark graphix tests by going SLI... Yet crysis, still bogs my computer. What a waste of a fun game.. When I can run games like COD4 - R6V2 - BF2 - Bioshock at 1680x1050 all settings max @ 75-150 FPS and crysis at same res all setting H NO AA - 25-40 FPS, its annoying...

Run just vid tests in 3dmark to see diff when OC'n - Canyon Flight-Return To Prxycon-FireFly etc... Just unselect cpu test from options and its a very effective vid benchmark.

Yep, CPU wont change much in gaming. You'll want to overclock your graphic cards to get a performance increase.

thank you all for posting-

if these games are GPU bound then i understand what you mean. however, coupled with this CPU OC was a Vid card oc

CPU OC- 2.4->>>>3.2
Core clock 576->>>> 626
Mem clock 900 ->>>>950
Shader Clock 1350->>>>1400

5k increase in 3DMARK score and still no increase in gaming performance. i must say however that loading times did decrease significantly. but that is about it.

From my guess, running 2 x 8800gtx's your games are running as fast as they can, the gpu OC isnt gona do much in that case, however, it is going to help in some areas, load times most def.
