8800GT Crash!

Hi,

Got a stock 8800gt 512 from sparkle. No problems with the cards as it runs all games and benchmarks. But when it comes to OCing i get to a dead end.

At stock speeds with a temp of 51C and 74C on load it runs really stable (no problems with 3dmark,games and ATItool).

Above 642 core clock 3dmark06 crashes in SM2 tests after 10-15 secs (no problems with HDR tests). ATITool finds artifact errors and crashes if 3d View is selected.

Between 620 and 640 core clock no errors can be seem by ATITool but you can actually see some yellowish boxes on the artifact tester displayed randomly in various sizes.

System: Shuttle ST20G5, Athlon64 3800+ (SingleCore), 1GB DDR400 Ballistix CL2, WD 74GB Raptor.

Any ideas?

Use rivatuner to crank up your fan speed. Make sure you good airflow in the Shuttle.

What clock you running on your CPU? It is most likely bottlenecking your 8800GT. My CPU bottlenecks my card a bit and I didn't get much performance boost by raising the core, the shaders though gave me a noticeable improvement.

well the CPU runs at stock speed, 2.41GHz. I also did play around with the fan and constantly monitored if it was a temp issue but temps seem to be always low with both rivatuner, gpu-z and atitool.

So you just oc the shader and left everything else stock?

Well I overclocked everything, but I noticed the most FPS jump when I cranked the shader to 1800.

What Power Supply are you running?

Chieftec 500W 3 12V rails, 16A, 18A and 18A each.

Bad idea you say eh? You mean for oc porpuses? or in general?
in general. the card will still perform good but not at its full Potential. and most newer games require a dual core processor for optimal performance. Your PSU seems to be ok. i found that when my 88GT hits around 74C it crashes so try crankin up the fan sped in RivaTuner and try again.
Good Luck.

Well i'll keep it in stock until i get a system upgrade.

It just seems odd to me that i get problems by just ocing from 600 to 630 with no temp problems...
