Possible to record from TV to external hard drive?

Thread Starter
Without using my PC and asus tuner card? A relative wants this, but without all the nonsense of DVR subscription (why do dvr's which are little more than this require subscriptions?)

I know iomega has an external hard drive case with integrated tuner and remote to play video put on it on TV, but that cannot record video.

Any ideas? If not would anyone explain to me why DVR's with as small as 250 GB hard drive get into the $1000's range if they have no subscription?

I believe the subscription fees are just to give you access to a program guide. That way, you can just select what program you want to record from a menu, rather than manually entering the start-stop times old-school like a VCR.

The subscription fees are where they really get their profit. It's like giving you a cell phone free/cheap, then making you pay monthly to use it. The same thing happens with inkjet printers - the printer is cheap, but the ink is overpriced (that's why the manufacturers make it harder and harder to refill the cartridges). This pricing scheme has been going on for a long time - it's typically referred to as razor and razor blade pricing (or something like that), you can figure out from the name where it started.

Honestly, you can build a PC with this functionality and at least a 500 GB HD for ~$500. It wouldn't take much power and the addition of a HD3450 would eliminate the need for a powerful CPU.

For SD recording and playback, you don't need a video card with any dual core CPU. For $400, you can build your own DVR with a 500GB HD.

Problem is the relative I need it for is old, with all that implies. Lets just say they have yet to be convinced to use the internet. But they want to record cable.

To make matters worse, their TV has no HDMI, or DVI, nor HD interface, only analog L, R, V connectors.

I have a feeling I'm gonna have to buy them a new tv as well.

EDIT: I'm wondering, can DVD recorders with hard drives have thier hard drives exchanged to something with a bigger capacity? I can buy a cheap one then and plug in something I have maybe?

I can understand being "old minded" and thinking that cable TV is the end all of end alls...

But seriously, if they are willing to pay CABLE prices for TV, then maybe you should tell them to switch to either satellite or AT&T Uverse which both give you free DVRs with their service. If they don't like that, then just have them rent a DVR box from their cable provider and use the "cable guide" to select the shows that they want to record. Its not that much more expensive over their regular cable bill.
