[Project] Q-Box

Nothing ends the semester and starts the summer quite like a new build, and I'm lucky enough to be starting one.

I had some parts laying around, and a friend who badly needed a new computer, so I offered to build him one, so long as he paid for parts and a really cheap builder's fee. His ideas had gone through several iterations. We new from the start that he wanted AMD, because I had an AMD mATX motherboard that I wasn't using, and he didn't want to go out and pay a lot of money for a new one. With that in mind, I watched the forums here and picked up a few parts. I ordered some fans, a Q-Pack case, cheap power supply, 7800GT and a box full of cables. He started out wanting one of the new phenoms, 8 gigs of ram, and those were his only two real requests. After talking with him and exploring some more ideas, we came down to the fact that he didn't want to spend as much money as those two items would cost him. I talked him into a 5000+ non black edition for two reasons: 1) he doesn't want to overclock, and 2) the black editions were sold out on newegg. This guy likes flash, so we reallocated some funds to UV lights and reactive fans for his case. We will also be using some highlighter to make some more components UV reactive. I've been working on his case today, will get pictures up in a while (after I'm done for the day) and will also get pictures of the components that will be going into the Q-Box as they arrive.

This is my first worklog for a case mod, and I'm very excited to see what I can get done in this small space.

Pulled the box apart, and sanded it down so the paint would have something to stick to.

This is the paint I used, thought it would work out pretty well, as it is designed for high heat, and says it needs no primer.

Hung everything from my garage door!

Had to wash the plastic panels, got kinda messy in the shipping.

And then newegg arrived! Hooray!

Here's a shot of the parts I had to order:

The list of components put into this build:
KINGWIN ABT-450MM 450W ATX 12V Ver.2.2 Power Supply - Retail
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane
OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB)
SAMSUNG 20X DVD±R DVD Burner
3 UV cold cathodes
2 x 80mm fans
1 x 120 mm fan
The things I already had:
ASrock AliveNF6G-VSTA motherboard (not good at OC'ing at all, but he didn't want to OC)
EVGA 7800GT
2 Random harddrives that he had and wanted to keep using
Apevia Q-Pack case
Led's to stick in the dvd drive

So, I opened up the DVD drive and put some LED's in the back. It looks pretty cool when the lights are off.

I also cut into one of the acrylic windows to add some airflow to this case:

And when I needed to get little bits from the store I took this:

Big Ruckus FTMFW!

I had to fit so much into this case, it was kind of ridiculous:

In the end though, I think it was worth it:

The UV cathodes play really well with the dimm slots.

The computer is running flawlessly, the added airflow from the fans is keeping the CPU and board very cool, the customer is very happy with it, and my first modding job is a success, or so I believe.
