locking up

Thread Starter
my computer has just recently been locking up right after boot not all the times just once and awhile and it has been doing it randomly mostly when idle while windows is running
and also the screen goes blank if i leave my computer on overnight i have my computer at stock settings (no overclock) for the time being until i figure this out
heat is fine my processor runs ~40 degrees C on full load
any idea's what can be causing this..?

What is your PSU model?
To start I would test your ram and HDD.

Hellsaber, start off with running a diagnostic on your memory. If can get on another machine, downloaded memtest and burn the .iso to a CD. If your able to boot to the CD run test 5 and 8 each for at least an hour and see if it brings up any errors.
For troubleshooting purposes you could also run a surface scan on your HD to rule that out. Download Western Digitals Lifeguard Tools and burn that to a CD as well. That utility is also bootable after POST.
Physically check the motherboard and look for bulging/leaking caps.

Let us know

Good luck

Hellsaber, James was a little curious above about the brand/model of your power supply. Care to share that with us?

I know it's kind of a farfetched theory, but you should download a registry cleanup program like Tuneup Utilities. I've ran it on friends computers when they were all messed up and small things like invalid registries from old programs and such caused the most annoying problems in windows.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe a bad video card? Maybe the drivers need to be updated or something.
