e8400 max voltage? - Page 3

From Anandtech:
"quick maximum-frequency run on water indicates the proverbial sky's the limit when it comes to overclocking the E8500. The maximum achievable frequency had more to do with our nerves than anything else. Given the voltage, our E8500 was more than happy to continue scaling higher. However, we eventually said enough is enough and called it quits - that point came when we were subjecting our poor 45nm CPU to over 1.6V, a level that could possibly require you hand over your credit card number in exchange for another CPU in no time flat. Quite simply, we believe any voltage over 1.45V is asking for trouble with 45nm processors and our conversations with Intel to date have all but confirmed our suspicions."

I'm running 4.05Ghz @ 1.44v (effective).

Been this way for a few weeks now.

Temperatures do not seem bad (no more then 67*c per core, 57*c chip) under extended stress testing, so I am staying with it.

Worst case scenario: burn out E8400... get a E8500!

However, If I had a $1000+ extreme chip, I would stay within spec.

I RMA'd my first E8400 due to my system being VERY unstable. My new chip is great but I am waiting until I get my water installed to push it further. Not sure what caused the problem with my first one but I did up the voltage to 1.4 to get 4.3GHZ but only for a short period. Intel recommended 1.3625 as the max but tons of people are pushing them much further.

Just got my E8500 fired up. Had a leaky waterblock so I got the Apogee GTX and lapped the e8500. Running 49-52ºC load on both cores @ 4.2Ghz (467x9) @ 1.328v effective. Haven't even tried running lower voltage yet! VID is 1.050v on this chip.

I know when we had 65nm 1.5Vcore was pretty common however yea with 45nm probbaly 1.45 is a good bet as anandtech states...i don't see why you would need much more than that

Those voltages are if the chip is stepping (multiplier changing) under load. Great for saving power, and generating less heat when not under load, BAD for stability!

I've intentionally set my cpu voltage to 1.5v and have been running it for nearly a week. I plan on redoing the stability test after 30 days. I stopped the test at 6hrs on my initial run when first doing the voltage increase.

Running mine @ 467x9 (4.203) @ 1.344v effective stable. 1.32 failed orthos after a few hours. Having issues with getting this maximus formula to post at higher FSB even when dropping the multi. Not sure if settings being set to "auto" are causing this (NB/SB/FSB term, etc. settings).

BTW - Max 53ºC both cores after about 6 hours of folding, with the door in my office closed and ambient sitting right around 31-32ºC (I know, hot, no venthilation and cut AC off to this room)

Honestly, the max voltage is impossible to say since there's not too much history. Also the very early batch may just have been proned to dying no matter the circumstances. Don't you guys just cringe when the top overclockers are pushing 1.9+ volts through the 9770's? *It's on the 3dmark06 hall of fame top scorers* especially through skulltrails? Ouch if you burned that one good god.

If it was me, I'd just take one for the team and just run mine as high and temperatures allow, then RMA/get a new one later on since most of you guys don't even keep you cpu long enough for it to really get destroyed. When I got my CPU most people said nothing above 1.4 or so, but I said that's retarded since none of you guys have shown substantial mathematical proof of the limits of the cpu (and this would be impossible, I know) so it's mostly speculative work. Later on it was revealed that dell ran their h2o 720 at 1.6 I believe. I ran mine at 1.55 and 1.6 for a while, but I realized I'm sort of wasting electricity since mine 6750 would only clock up to 3.6 no matter what. So now it's back down to 1.5 oh well.
