AMD 3800 X2 Overclock Problems

Thread Starter
Hi there,

This is my first post on the forum, i thought i would get myself on here and hopefully get some advice from some experienced overclockers (unlike me)

For the past 2 years i have been on and off with overclocking my pc, currently its sitting at 2.4 and is stable. But i have read that i could see more out of it and i have kept trying to follow guides but i am getting no where, i tried 2.6 ghz today but it locks up as soon as i get on the desktop.

My pc specs are the following:

AMD 3800 X2 (939)
Asus A8N Sli Premium
Corsair XMS 3200 (2gb)
Sli 7800 Gt

I was just wondering if anyone would be able to help me with overclocking my pc or they could point me in the direction of any Guides for my specs. I have found guides before for the 3800, but cant seem to find any with my motherboard.

Thanks

when overclocking s939 systems, watch out for your HT Link... dont let it go over 1000 or you WILL have problems....

watch the voltage, and reference clock settings. if you jack the clock up too high your ram might not cut it, so you may need to make adjustments there too.

also, maybe your vcore needs to be bumped up, starving the cpu of power when trying to make it work harder just doesnt work...

Hey, thanks for the welcome!

Will try what you have advised Superk. Sorry about not replying in a decent time. My other graphics card decided to pack itself in. Atleast i had a SLi system, so can atleast use the pc....

So looks like the pc is back to normal so i can get back to overclocking.

Is your X2 3800+ a Manchester core or Toledo core? That would explain a WHOLE lot if its Manchester core .

Even though you can't see it (have my dad's rig in my sig currently)...I'm rocking a very nice 939 system myself....that's the best I own. I've ran a X2 3800+ Manchester core (still do actually on my game server) on my ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard....and it hit 2.5GHz stable at its highest. On the Jetway 939GT SLI board its currently installed in, it hits 2.4GHz max stable OC. So it really depends.

And yes, you'll want to keep your HT Link at or below 1000MHz. Try to keep your RAM as close to stock speed and timings as well via divider. You can tweak your RAM later, sounds to me like you're wanting to overclock your CPU more.

My core is a Manchester, i take it this would explain my low overclocks?

I have got it at 2.4 Ghz at the moment, im guessing i shouldnt really try any further.

Most who have experience with S939 dual-cores will tell you Manchesters require lots of VCore to get it over 2.5-2.6GHz. I've got an X2 3800+ Manchester running at 2.5GHz, 1.42V VCore, in my office machine. To be honest, I've not pushed it beyond its current OC (I don't need any more for its role), so I can't speak to how much more it has got nor how much VCore it can tolerate before temperatures go really crazy.

But, just as a comparison, consider that I've got an Opteron 170 (Denmark core, which is identical in all but name to a Toledo X2 dual-core) running in my sig rig. It's sitting comfortably at 2.8GHz, at a VCore of 1.37V (drops to 1.34V at max load). Clearly, the Denmark/Toledo requires much less VCore than a Manchester to run high overclocks. It's a good illustration of the prevalent trends when comparing a Manchester dual-core to a Toledo/Denmark dual-core.
