Thanks for all your input guys. +rep.

I think I'm best off by just sticking with 720p.

720p is fine. My projector (112" diagonal screen) is 720p and you cant really tell the difference between a 720p movie and a 1080p movie downsampled. In fact, the 1080p ones often look like they have sharper edges and any text that comes on screen is a lot sharper as well. I think it has a lot to do with your scaling engine. When I did this test i was coming out of my computer's DVI to my receiver (Onkyo) that has a Faroudja DCDi scaler. Upsampling is super clear on this system, and downsampling actually looks pretty decent. I think it really depends on your source scaling engine vs. your TV's scaling engine. Theres a lot of scaling going on in my system (nVidia, Faroudja DCDi, and then whatevers in the projector, I believe it is an older Faroudja chip) so I am not sure what exactly makes it so clear, but it looks really sharp. I think the scaler that really matters is whatever is in the projector, since it comes out as 720p from there, but stays as 1080p throughout.
