Hello, basically I play a FPS game (counter strike source).. everything is up to par but my sound.... i cant hear ppl walking around unless there right by me... i have my onboard sound and UBER CHEAP logitech speakers.

was wondering if http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829180004
would be an upgrade from my onboard HD audio?
Specs for my onboard
Audio Chipset: ADI AD1986A
Audio Channels: 6 Channels

(Also should i get better speakers or do speakers not matter too much?)

Then turn the volume up.

If your volume is already turned up such that loud sounds are very loud to you, but you still can't hear people "far away", better speakers won't help that. The ratio between the loudest and quietest sounds in part of the games programming. And other than using a sound limiter (a device that makes the loud sounds quieter, but doesn't make the soft sound quieter) there is nothing you can do about it.

Better speakers, while possibly being able to play sounds louder than your current speakers without distorting, will not change the ratio between the loud and the quiet sounds, they will just make everything sound better (ie more real).

And, no, don't buy that sound card.

Here are my suggestions although I don't know your budget...

For a good performing sound card take a look at these:
Xtremegamer
Xtrememusic

both are between $50-60, the music is slightly better, but they don't make it anymore, so its harder to come by. The Xtremegamer is a half-sized card, and the music is full sized.

As for speakers, maybe speakers aren't the answer at all....

I myself always play with a good set of headphones on

so here are my value suggestions for you to look at:

Audio Technica:
AD700s
A700s

Beyer Dynamics:
DT770 Pro 80s

Sennheiser:
HD555s
HD580s

Really I hear footsteps a lot, and can basically pinpoint where people are... from radar, sounds, and shots... but it may be personal preference.
