4gb of matched ram is better for overclocking, but if your leaving it stock then it really doesn't matter.

Performance wise you are better off with pairs so that it runs dual channel. So if it is two 512mb in addition to the 2x 1GB go for that.

yeah i have 2g of matched ram now the 3 g would be 2 diff speeds and brands. Sorry i wasn't more clear. Was trying to ask would 3 g of mixed ram be better than 4 g of matched ram in dual of just stay with my 2 g of matched. Don't want to go to 64 bit upgrade til I can save up for a new puter a bit later.

Well, of those options the matched 4 GB is best, but i'd try the 3 GB and see how it goes since it won't cost you anything .

If your not overclocking I stand by my earlier post that the more the better. If your overclocking then matching sets is the best idea.

no I do not plan to oc this rig," yeah shoot me". It will not cost much to get 4g of matched ram so was just trying to see what was best for me. I have an nvidia 8800gt now to replace my 7600gt vid card.

With zero overclocking I doubt you would notice a difference between matched and unmatched sets, in everyday use.
