[XR] AMD future - Page 2

My questions is...Will this be a totally different cpu architecture? Reason being...since when does AMD put 8mb cache into a cpu. Hasn't helped before with larger cache. Maybe there is a surprise around the corner

The larger cache will probably help with server tasks and given the cache hierarchy of K10, going from L1 to L2 to L3 adds quite a bit of latency and the have to go from L3 to RAM collectively adds even more latency so I'd assume they would want a larger L3 to lower RAM access.

Given their financial situation right now, I'd imagine they probably don't have a lot of resources to spare for Bulldozer, but they really need to try to speed that out the door a bit faster. If they're relying on the Barcelona architecture to survive until the second half of 2010, they're going to lose even more marketshare, even in areas that they are dominant now, such as the MP market.

AMD might just make it. if there new CPU's are coltage friendly and overclock better then the intels then hey im there.

the thing is the new intel CPU have been to known to burn out. i find that AMD tend to run better at high voltages and cooler for that matter as well. lets just hope that they make some kick ass CPU at a reduced price then the market might just be theirs.

coltage friendly

i am switching back to AMD next time i build - the lack of OCing on Nehalem is not a fun thing, i think

I like the idea of many cores but whats the point?. Even quads dont get used effectivly. Heck even dual cores.

Yes they will but offer a far more expensive unlocked version to milk the enthusiasts for more money still!
But, that is irrelevant to the topic at hand which is the server market.
amazingly, some current slower AMD Server CPUs are more productive in some areas than some faster current Intel CPUs, so speed isn't always the bottom line.

And the AMD server cpus scale better than the Intel cpus when put in multi cpu configurations.

I don't mean to be rude, but it's just FudZilla and speculation so far.. I wouldn't sell the stock so soon.

Thats the 45nm process, AMD chips will be just as vulnerable. However this is completely normal, as the process shrinks, they need less voltage.

So are they going to maintain the same architecture till Bulldozer?

All this looking at the future just keeps getting me more pumped for Nehalem.

Though I can't help but wonder if AMD will make it that long. How long has it been since they broke even for a quarter? They are currently pursuing New architecture for their CPU's and GPU's, doing work on a CPU-GPU hybrid, and trying to make a 45nm process shrink, and all are billion dollar affairs, can they sustain that?

FSB architecture really doesn't scale too well.
