Reseating?

Im going to reseat my heat sink today, as my temps are stupidly high.

My question is, how much thermal paste to use??

A colleague of mine said to use the whole tube!

I have a feeling that his thinking may be wrong..

whole tube! frick! for a server farm, maybe. jesus a whole tube should last u a shiite load of cpu's. u using AS5? my method is to use just enough to make as thin a layer as possible by putting a tiny bit on and then scraping it around with a business card/credit card till u get a very thin but whole covering (no cpu showing). then wen u reassemble, try not to twist or move the heatsink around too much so that u dont end up with one edge with less than the other.

hope this helps,

Will having used the whole tube be bad? will it stop the heatsink from working correctly?

Does it mean that the conductivity is reduced?

These instructions tell you to apply a drop or strip to the heat spreader, and letting the heatsink take care of spreading it.

Personally I spread it out manually all over the heat spreader before applying the heat sink - what's the point of having a heat spreader over the entire pcb if you're not going to have full contact with all of it?

Using the whole tube would result in paste being spread all over the motherboard around the socket once you tighten the heatsink, very messy and potentially conductive. Not good. Obviously the heat conduction would be worse because you'd have too much paste in between, but if the heatsink is tightened that would be the least problem..

You would most likely fry your computer because it would get all over the cpu socket and motherboard.

I was going to link the guides but bowman beat me to it, so use those links.

I reseated my Heatsink last night, having removed what was quite alot of thermal paste, it is now seated better i think. My temps dropped by about 2/3c but nothing special, still hits nearly 70c on 100% load.

Im now starting to think this heatsink isnt up to the job.

Can anyone reccomend an awesome AM2 socket heatsink? I have about £350 to spend so money isnt really an option, I have been thinking about watercooling, but im not gonna go there until my Phenom gets here

TheStig, check to make sure the cooler is making full contact. When you remove the cooler does it look like the thermal compound was spread evenly on the processor? 70C at full load might indicate a poor contact.

In regards to your question about heatsinks, I have heard many good things about the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme.

Good luck
