E2160 Bottleneck?

Thread Starter
I am experiencing some stutter when playing Gears of War. The thing is, I don't think it is graphics card stuttering because when there is some hardcore rendering scene with an explosion or some lighting it does fine, but it lags a little after loading a new chapter.

When I look at the CPU utilization I am seeing it reaching 100% on both cores at certain times. Should this be happening? And if it is, does that mean that my processor is actually bottle necking my system?

Also, I hate the B word as well, but this is the only thing I can see as being the perpetrator.
Yes, it could be your CPU because of your grahpics card need support from the CPU to cope with heavy load that you put on the grahpics card.

Straight out, your grahpics card is not good enough for what you play.

You should either get another 9600GT and go SLI or 8800GTS 512mb or some other highend card.

So put your money on a grahpics card upgrade and not on a new CPU.

Err my card isn't good enough for Gears of War? My framerate never drops below 40 even with DX10 and 4xAA on.

That's why I suspect my CPU. It's not even annoying stutter. It's like for 3 second every 5 minutes or so.
In theory, yeah your system is being bottlenecked by your CPU if you say both cores are at 100%. Should it be like that, probably not. But if it's only happening once every 5 minutes with GoW only, I would ignore it.

It's most likely some cache clearing or something.

If its only when chapters change I wouldnt worry about it....

I wouldnt think a dual core at 3.2 would be getting bogged down that much it sounds more to me like a read/write or communication issue... When loading new chapters or saving them its communicting with the harddrive, and you have to factor in cpu/mem/ and HD performance..

an E2160 at 3.2? i would think it's your GPU more than anything. Be sure to close all running apps before gaming, but as someone else stated, it may be a HDD issue or something like that, maybe ram or w/e

I looked heavily into whether or not a 2160 or 2180 would be a bottleneck for a high-end card. The explanation from a few random sources is that with slower settings the CPU could be the bottleneck but at the most extreme settings a graphics card would be.

However, I can't claim to know. I know my 3dmark06 framerates for the CPU tests weren't very good when I had mine clocked at 3.2, so a large open battlefield could be the problem. You can test that out with supreme commander most likely.

You may also be looking at a problem with hard disk speed. How fast is your seagate? I know the Age of Conan developers told people that before a quad core would ever be fully utilized the hard disk speed might be a limiting factor, but of course that game might be less demanding of the CPU.

I´m sorry, excuse me for coming down on you that hard, but people tend do think that a new CPU do wonder to there fps.

Maybe it´s nothing wrong with your system, maybe it´s the game.

I had hugh drop in fps when I played RSV and RSV 2 when new levels was loaded ingame and that was with my Striker Extreme Rig (E8400@3,6 450x8, RAM@1200 5-5-5-15, 8800GTX SLI, WD Raptor and with bandwitdh above 10k.

What I ment in my post where that don´t save money on your grahpics card, you be better of with highend grahpics card then with a highend CPU.

Here´s a example.

Done with Crysis Benchmark Tool, Far Cry Benchmark Tool on my Rampage Rig

266 9 2,4, 800 5-5-5-15 PL5

Crysis
1280x960 Low Q 0xAA 78,63 fps
1600x1200 High Q 0xAA 28,57 fps

Far Cry
1600x1200 Low Q 0xAA, 0xAF 131,28 fps
1600x1200 All juice on 16QxAA, 16xAF 39,44 fps

475 8 3,8, 1266 5-5-5-15 PL7

Crysis
1280x960 Low Q 0xAA 119,75 fps
1600x1200 High Q 0xAA 28,42 fps

Far Cry
1600x1200 Low Q 0xAA, 0xAF 210,80 fps
1600x1200 All juice on 16QxAA, 16xAF 39,42 fps

It´s not a noticeable difference with high resulotion and high quality even thou we have FSB 266 and 2,4 up to FSB 475 and 3,8 but with low resulotion and low quality there is.

I have showed similary example to folks and recommed then (if they game) to put there money on a better grahpics card then on mobo, CPU and memory.

So going with for example E8400, 800 5-5-5 and a highend grahpic card with out OC is good enough as it is.

But I you want OC your system you got for example, a more responsive and snappier system and your loading times for games gets shorter and applications starts faster and don´t forget, the wellbeing of how good your are OC your system.

When all this is said and done a hope you can forgive me for being hard on you.

Cheers

I don't believe it is your cpu. When GoW came out, a lot of people noticed that it would stutter every few minutes at random. Turns out, that the stuttering (in most cases) is from it loading data from the HDD. Nothing wrong with your comp

Although when I played GoW, I never had that problem, but then again I have raid 0 raptors because I'm stupid enough to spend money like that on HDDs.

But yea, it's just HDD loading, not cpu.

And for people saying that a 9600 GT isn't enough for GoW, wrong. I can play it on my 8800 GT (not a whole lot better than a 9600) maxed out, dx10 and full AA and rarely drop below 50fps.

Its not the CPU its the GPU what will get you to high FPS. core 2 duo is more then enough for any game right now if it clocked over 3ghz.
