Source needs to move on, otherwise it WILL look outdated compared to the rest. As I said, Steam is pretty much a mainstay of most gamers, and with some clever marketing, Valve could gather enough muscle to twist gamer's arms.
QF***? Why would you want a company bend you over, doesn't EA do that enough for the entire market?

http://www.steampowered.com/status/survey.html

Steam: "DirectX10 Systems (Vista with DirectX10 GPU) - 9.56% of users"

81% of Steam users have XP
17.5% have Vista/Vista X64
0.15% have linux.

They don't think enough people will buy their game if its DX10.

How does the hardware survey work? Unfamiliar with that aspect of Steam.

Every so often users are asked if they would like to take part in a valve hardware survey. Agreeing to this, the steam client collects some information about hardware and drivers from your system, and uploads this data to valves hardware database.

All I have to say is, Let me see a title that is actually 100% DX10. Until I see a game actually utilize DX10 I won't know if it was really worth it or not.

Every title out now that supports DX10 is not even truely a DX10 game. They are all coded for DX9 for the base and then DX10 for the outter layer so to speak for the ones that do have it.

So as of right now, I can't tell one wink of a difference between DX9 and DX10. Maybe if a dev would suck it up and just take some time on a project for DX10 we could actually for once see the true difference.

I wish Valve would at least start to redesign the Source engine so when the time comes it would be ready and easily implemented into whatever title they are working on at that time.

But for now, well all I have to say is: The cake is not real!!

You can still achieve similar graphics and or effects as dx10. It seems that dx10 only gave soft shadows, changing weathing and dynamic day simulations, extra effects, and just an updated system that can handle more textures and polygons... why have only an updated dx9 and force people to pay an extra 500 bucks just to get it (good videocard plus vista). In dx9 you can still have the same effects and just beaf up texturing and whatnot, some of these effects dx10 are just too extreme for graphic cards today and or just the same dx9 game with a few added effects...

Why waste the time is what their saying basically? Should we spend time to satisfy only a few or continue and just have work done in the background just fiddling with dx10? Dx9, imo, kinda gives a lot better performance with proper graphics crysis though is the exception (extra effects and shadowing, better graphics, etc can easily be an update for dx9.0 d )

...and what, Day of Defeat Source looks bad? The source engine incorperates good graphics (some even amazing) with excellent performance. Proper colours, phyics, effects, (shadowing could be updated - seems like it will be in Left for Dead), amazing stabibility with many players (heard somewhere it can handle 128-256 players no proper, just need a good server), and can be easily moded, and changed. Day of Defeat Source looks amazing and is fun. The machanics are there and it has graphics that can compete. Source doesn't look outdated 4 years ago and still doesn't look outdated today
