Perhaps I am not understanding this correctly, but this does no good if the monitor's response time isn't fast enough to display the image. 240 times per second means an image is only displayed for 4.17ms, so unless the response time is less than that I don't see how this helps.

I would also like to point out that although some TVs from Sony, Samsung, and Toshiba do have 120Hz capabilities, they still do not pass all 1080i/24p testing. (See here for example.)

I still don't quite understand how you can have a 120hz LCD if your source is only at 25-30 frames per second.

It will make a huge difference for computer displays. Currently, most LCD monitors only support 60-85Hz refresh rate, meaning if the FPS goes above that figure, you will get screen tearing. With 240Hz, you would be tear-free all the way up to 240Hz. That is incredible. It still doesn't eliminate ghosting (which is different from tearing), but ghosting is minimal to nil at and below 8ms response.

Refresh rate is completely different than framerate.

The 240Hz will do no good if the monitor can't generate the frame fast enough, as I already pointed out, and ghosting depends upon your framerate with respect to your response time.

It will eliminate the tearing, even if the response time is not fast enough. Response time is responsible for ghosting. Refresh rate is responsible for tearing.

Tearing is due to un-synchronization of your frame buffer and your monitor's refresh rate. A monitor with a faster refresh rate has nothing to do with reducing tearing.

I didn't say it wouldn't eliminate tearing, I said it wouldn't matter if the refresh rate were 240Hz if the response time cannot keep up. If your monitor doesn't have a response time less than 4.17ms, it can't display 240 frames in a second. Your second and third sentences are exactly what I said and contradictory to what you initially said.
