What Power Supply? - Page 2

I'm sorry, I was thinking of another article when I was thinking about the e7200 review. They also don't state how they got their power consumption numbers.

Here is a good power consumption review. The review wasn't for the 8800gt but you can see the 8800gt on the chart there. That is with an e6550 and you have to multiply by .82 to get rid of psu inefficiency at that load. So even overclocking it should still be under 250W load for a system with one HD.

That Purepower isn't bad, it's a CWT but I'm sure some corners have been cut at that price and it is a little weak on the 12V rail.

I know you didn't ask for opinions on motherboards, but I have that motherboard in a backup rig and it's not the greatest overclocker. I found it to have a fsb wall at around 375 fsb. Personally, for $140, I would go with the motherboard in my sig rig unless you must have SLI. If SLI is a must, theres a used EVGA 680i in the For Sale section.

Actually i chose the p6n because newegg usually has it for $110, and it has 2 IDE connectors which is what i need, i have 2 HDs and 2 CD/DVD Drives.** Also did you press F4 for the hidden options in the CPU menu, this is supposed to let you overclock alot more then just by the other settings.

Since you guys are looking here, i have been debating on CPUs, the E8400 or the E7200, now im will be overclocking, so how much performance difference will there be between a e7200 at 3.3-3.6 and the e8400 3.6-4.0? Is it actually worth it? I will be converting and editing video files mainly, not gaming, i prefer my xbox 360 for that. ***Also is the 17Amps on the 12v rail of the antec 430watt earthwatts good enough for overcloking? On another forum someone told me you generally want above 20Amps

It's my understanding that the e7200 is a bit behind the e8400 clock for clock <5%. I've also seen a review where the e7200 hit 4gHz which also seems to be the sweet spot for e8400. I really don't know, the e7200 seems to be a good buy but I'm not an expert on cpus.

I do know that the Earthwatts has 30A available on the 12V (it has two rails at 17A max) and will be enough for either of those 2 cpus with a 8800gt but will have a limited upgrade potential.

oh ok i didn't relize the rails amperage was split when using two. Wire Are you completely sure the p6n has a wall at 375? If so i might start looking at the p7n platinum. Its hard to find a quality mobo with 2 PATA(IDE) connectors, which is why i like the MSI boards. Because 9.5x 375 is only 3560Mhz It would be nice to take it aroung 3.8Ghz without upping the vcore. I saw one guy who actually overclocked the e7200 to 3.2Ghz and lowered the vcore to 1.080v. Anyway as for upgradeability, im in high school and im going to buy a laptop for when i go to college so im planning on giving this PC to my parents, since they are still running a P4 2.8Ghz 478 socket, and with all the security programs running on it(Mcaffe and antispyware), my P3 800Mhz PC runs faster then it, not really but it does boot windows XP in 32 seconds. So i dont care for upgrading it, and the most demanding game they will play is solitare. Which explains why im trying to keep this cheap. I have to go just so you dont think i ditched this thread.

I just looked at some motherboards on newegg and i found that the ASUS P5N-E, the ASRock Penryn1600SLI 775 650i SLI, the MSI p6n platinum, the MSI p7n platinum. Now i have read that the Asus also might have a 375fsb limit, if you guys know anything about overclocking on these platforms please point me in the right direction, thanks
