Need help overclocking my new rig!!

Thread Starter
Hey guys. I am building a rig from scratch and it should be pretty awesome...but I have never overclocked before. I want this thing to be really sweet...and I know I want to overclock it...but I never have.

I was wandering if I could get some guidance?? Where do i start.

Do i OC the CPU THE Graphics Card the memory first??

How do I overclock each of these to safe levels?

How do i know when i have OCed as far as my equipment will let me?

How can I test to make sure all is well after I OC?

This is a first for me...I figured my very first rig would be a good opportunity to try it out...but I dont want to f it up...so any help is much appreciated. Thank you very much.

Well - How to overclock....that is the ultimate question around here.

Take a look at some of the overclocking guides here on the forums to get specifics for your board...but ...here is some basic stuff for you.

Make sure you are monitoring heat all the time. I prefer Coretemp...but there are many out there. I don't trust Nvidia Monitor though....it always reports10c-12c less.

I would recomend starting with the CPU first...
Enter Bios and go to the FSB and start making small increases. I usually go about 15FSB at a time. Restart and run prime95 for a while and check for stability. If it runs for a while stable...then it's time to make another adjustment.

Eventually - you will get to a point where you either won't post, won't pass prime, or get a BSOD...now you have gone far enough.

I wouldn't start getting into voltages until you are comfortable with what you are doing...and by then - you should have a better idea.

Next...GPU
Download Rivatuner, ATITool or another similar overclocking program and sort of do the same thing. Adjust the sliders for clock and memory a little bit at a time...scan for artifacts using ATI tool...etc. Eventually - you will hit a wall and thats your limit.

I would say to OC the CPU first. I'd say it is the most important. OC'ing the Memory usually goes with the CPU (they work together in a way). After that would be OC'ing the GPU. That is VERY straight forward and VERY easy to do.

Check these out to get you started:

and then use the program called ATItool for overclocking the GPU (http://overclock.net/graphics-cards-...e-all-you.html)

Good Luck!
