I'm interested to know this since I am moving to Baton Rouge (Geaux Tigers!) this fall. First thing my wife warned me as a native is don't expect the power to stay on.

They have automatic transfer switches for generators

Pretty penny.

I have wired about 100 different set ups for back up power.

Anywhere from a hilljacked cheapo system for my buddy, to a total power generation setup for a 500,000 square foot freezer (that was cool).

You can look around and find good deals on gennys right now.

Then talk to a local electrician and see if they can help you out with the transfer switch.

See if they will let you help out setting everything up, that way you'll learn something about your system.

An average house will get away with a 4500 watt (continuous) genny, it will power your: furnace, fridge, sump pump, some lite circuits (make sure you have it power your circuit that the puter is on)

Those devices are stated in terms of importance (remove furnace if you are in the south)

Cheers!

It is better to spend your money on another folding rig.

Your going to need....

Inverter Generator about 3000 watts
http://www.nextag.com/Yamaha-EF3000i...2B517CE37BDE1B
and

UPS
http://apc.com/resource/include/tech...tal_watts=2500

Switch
http://apc.com/resource/include/tech...?base_sku=UTS6

Some one to do the wiring.

You going to have to spend about min of 6k to do this.
And if you want this to be all automated, switch Inverter with about about $7k standyby generator

And do you need cooling? if so buy a new car it will be cheaper.

I bought this one on sale at best buy: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16842101067

It was $119 at the time and runs 3 of my rigs, my DSL router, 4 port Ethernet switch, 4 port KVM, and a 24" monitor with not much to spare. I mainly got it for power bumps (My main problem) and it works excellent for that even when one lasted about 2 minutes.

I haven't lost a work unit since I bought it and that's been over a year ago!
