AMD's K10: a "dead" Product or not?

Quote:
A few years ago it was fashionable to bash Intel's Pentium 4 as a braindead architecture. [...] It is now trendy to bash AMD. One "PC doctor" at ZDNet goes as far to say that:

"When I look at AMD’s current product line, all I see is a forest of deadness. Intel has products trump every category of products going. Server, desktop, mobile, low-end, high-end, dual-core, quad-core. Intel has all these markets stitched up."

Nuances, who needs them when you can make a sensational headline? And indeed, the lastest desktop CPU articles here at Anandtech show that Intel's midrange CPU have a significant lead over the fastest Phenom processors.

Like any design, the K10 is a trade-off. And most trade-offs were made in favor of the applications in the server and HPC market, at the expense of games and other desktop applications.
Quote:
So the right way forward for AMD was to focus on HPC and server applications where it could leverage it's strong points. We can bash AMD for being so late, and coming up with relatively low clocked CPUs, but even a 2.8 GHz Phenom would not have raise AMD's ASP significantly in the desktop market.
Quote:
Yes, projecting the bad performance of the desktop chip to say that "AMD's products are a dead forest" is ... just silly. If you have missed the previous entries of our IT blog, just go to it.anandtech.com

I think it's dead. The chips are slow, The clock speeds are low, And they suck way to much power for how little preformance they offer.

I think AMD needs to ditch the K10 CPUs as fast as they can and stop wasting money on making them, and start R&D on new ones.

With Nahalem right around the corner they won't stand even a small chance at beating Intel.

Meh .. I dont care anymore. I waited two years for AMD to do something. guess all this time ive been in denial. Core 2 truely is faster per clock.

Im not going to bash for AMD and im not going to bash for INTEL. Im no fanboy Ive been on my Core 2 rig for a few hours now And already it kills my Phenom 9600.There is no point in fighting over cpu's anymore.

AMD kids come to the true performance. I would advise it being a strong amd user.

If you believe the hype the next architecture will be brand new, where as Anandtech and Tom's hardware both judged the K10 to be still too heavily rooted in A64 to compete with Core. What if the company knew that the ground up architecture was still to far off and K10 was really just them coming out with anything while they were waiting for R&D to make some breakthrough on the real new architecture? Not saying that the new architecture with positively be competitive, but it wouldn't be the first time a stopgap product was released out of necessity.

Ppl will flock to amd anyways, intel is locking their CPUs. If thats true then thats good, because competition needs to exist.

The < 1% of us that overclock are not going to deal a huge blow to intel if they do choose to lock the CPUs anyway, and Intel knows this. If it happens, i'll stay with intel, might have to pay more, but i have a feeling it'll be worth it.

I think AMD needs to figure out how to get their graphics cards to do tradition CPU work,
