That is why it doesn't make sense. I am asking for an actual reason other than "because he said so." The lower multiplier makes sense, but that isn't always the controlling factor (take the E6600 vs. E6700 in the early days).

As for reviews, they are not necessarily less credible than what anyone here says. And telling me to search on OCN is like telling me to literally find a needle in a haystack considering how poor the search function is. If someone knows of threads it would be much easier for them to find it than I, so assuming I haven't searched doesn't help me either.
its common sense i dont understand what you are asking. 8x multi on a quad = FAIL

But that isn't always the entire story. The Q9450 may have a smaller multiplier but it also runs cooler and requires less voltage to reach the same frequency. If 45nm quads inherently cannot reach the same frequency as their 65nm counterparts then so be it, but simply telling me it is because of the multiplier is only stating what I already know from looking at the specs.

ok then let me put it this way the Q9450 cant come even close to the clocks of the Q6700. Plus the 45nm's are no fun at all with a 65 you can abuse it til the cows come home and its just gonna smile and take more but with a 45nm that chips gonna be in an envelope on its way back to intel before you know it if you try that

And I can accept that, but I haven't been given any links to support that statement and my own searches have revealed numerous threads where people are getting 3.6GHz easy, with load temperatures of only 40 degrees C. So unless you're telling me the Q6700 can hit 3.8GHz on air...

You also haven't suggested an X38 board. Do both the X38 and X48 have dual PCI-E 2.0 x16 lanes for Crossfire? I intend to get Crossfire as my next change in GPUs since Nvidia has been acting lame lately.

yes both X38 and X48 support dual 16x pcie2.0 crossfire and i did make a suggestion which was the gigabyte Ex38-DS4 ive had 3 x38 boards and it by far was the easiest most stable board.

So you claim you can get 4GHz on air-cooling with a Q6700 an X38 board?

the X38 and X48 are the same board there is little to no difference. I could probably get 4.5ghz with a good Q6700 on a ds4 x38. on air i would look for 3.8 since i was running 3.85 with a tuniq and my old quad

Eesh, and what were the temperatures? If I get a 3.5GHz every-day overclock with 50 degree loads on air I'll be extremely happy.

50 degree load! wow if you want that then i guess you are gonna have to go with a 45nm because thats not even gonna happen at stock settings with a 65nm quad

yea, if you don't aim for a high overclock, but for a lower overclock at lower temps... then indeed get the 45nm CPU (you didn't say that, so we assumed you're aiming for as high an overclock as possible )
