E8400 is Kicking my but!

Thread Starter
well I got this cpu from Frys about a week ago,and Its giving me a really hard time.

Batch#q802a496

Im getting bad temps--Probably due to a crappy cooler (freezer7pro)

the slightest OC seems to be unstable, wont run orthos for even 20 sec.

3.6-1.28 vcore cant run for 2 sec.

-NB is at Auto volts
-GSkillz Red 800mhz ram is at 2.0v and ive tried at stock clock and oc--both unstable.

-Wierd thing is it will boot up,and seem stable at decent clocks,i can even play crysis..it will boot up 4.0 at 1.26 but it cant run orthos for 2 sec.

i have no idea whats going on--Bad chip?--Noob overclocker?

please help!

Do you have the latest bios ? and you might need to bump some other voltages up to get it stable at a 400+ fsb.

Set ram to 2.0 ratio
all other voltage to normal-except v-core
I run E8400 @ 3.6
4x1GB red G.Skill @ 800mhz-1.8v
First thing I would do as usual is run memtest before you even get into windows. Try that and make sure you dont get errors. If you do then you need to fix your ram or NB. Somtimes ram dies and you wont be able to tell right away.

Try a lower oc. Start from stock with stock volts set. Then keep going till you cant pass a half hour of prime or occt and then start bumbing vcore and raising mhz. Not all the 8400's are gonna get the same oc's and it may just be a bad one that doesnt like high oc.

My E3110 will do 3960mhz jsut fine but doesnt like 4ghz for some reason. Good luck

what vcore do you run at 3.6?

and my ds3r wont run this ram at under 2.0 because of massive vdroop.

thnaks for the help.

I will try a mem test-hope everything checks.

i will try to go from stock up,but i will start at like 3.4,and i will let each run for 1/2,once thats achived,i will up the clock and vcore until i get another 1/2 hour, and so on.

thanks alot for the help guys, really appreciated.

I run 3.6 w/1.236 in bios, 1.216 in cpuz
The red G.Skill is rated 1.8-2.0v
Normal is 1.87
On my board you have to run 1.8 to start.
I emailed G.Skill about the red ram, here is what I got:

Hi, quick question
I have 4x1GB sticks of F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ (1.8-2.0v)
What would be the highest regular voltage I could run safely?
I have a GigaByte P35-DS3L which has high vdrop
400FSB 1X1 ratio 800mhz
normal 1.87v
bios auto 400FSB 2.04v
I love the ram and have it paired with that mobo and an E8400.
Any guidence appreciated.

Thanks

I just ran a 1 pass memtest (30 min)...and got 0 errors,so i dont think the ram is the culprit.

I did a little google'ing, and found this guy with the same batch# as mine.

he got to 4.0 by using an 8x multi and 500fsb,what is the advantage in this and would it work better...safe?...it would force me to run ram at 1000mhz beacuse the lowest multi on d3sr is 2.0

here is his OC.

4000Mhz | 1.272v | FSB500 | 500Mhz | Asus P5E | WaKü | Q802A496 | B |

It only really helps to drop the multiplier if you have already reached the limit for your CPU but you want to push your ram to go further.
