[dvHW] Microsoft: No new Xbox 360 in 2009

There was a rumour yesterday that Microsoft may be planning to release a slimmer Xbox 360 console next year but a Microsoft representative told Engadget that this is a hoax:
Specifying the release of "slimmed down SKU in 2009", Microsoft representative let us know today that "While we don't normally comment on rumors like this, we can tell you that we have no plans to release a new console in 2009". Yep, rumor assassinated, just like that. Of course, there still exists the possibility that Microsoft's just playing coy to prevent a little bit of Osborne effect from creeping in during their heated battle with the PS3 -- but they did go out of their way to directly comment on the rumor, so take it as you will.

I'm not going to wait forever, and Ninja Gaiden II is coming next month. I'll hold off for the new 65nm GPU/Memory revision, but then I'm getting a 360. I bought an Xbox for Forza Motorsport and Ninja Gaiden (Black) alone, and I didn't feel cheated at all. Looks like I'm going to do it again.

As MS come out so Directly about it then I would say there are no plans for 2009 in this respect.

The only way it would make sense to release a new X360 SKU ever, 2009 or otherwise, would be if they actually intended to include a Blu-Ray drive. And I don't think they will; if they ever release a drive, it will be an add-on like the HD-DVD.

Why doesn't it make sense to ever release a new SKU? Because they've already confused the heck out of people by the endless parade of new SKUs. Average Joe still doesn't know whether he needs an Arcade, Pro, or Elite. Rather than adding new SKus, Microsoft needs to kill off the Arcade SKU altogether and get the product lineup down to two choices.
