Vista Installation Problems

Thread Starter
I was not sure where to post this but maybe someone here can hemp me.

I am re-installing Vista on my machine. I am using a vista Ultimate upgrade disk to do a clean install.

I am installing the OS onto two SAS drives in a RAID 0 array using an Adaptec 5405 controller. I have the drivers installed on a thumb drive and loaded them in the install.

Here is my problem. When the installation is at the "copying files" stage it goes from 0% to 100% in only about 1-2 seconds. This was my first clue something was wrong. It then continued extracting files and finished installing normally. The only thing that seemed odd was how fast it copied the files.

Now after the screen "windows is preparing to start for the first time" i only have a mouse on a black screen. Does anyone know what would cause this?

Thanks

Try removing 2 gigs of ram and starting over.. its known to cause issues.

If that works don't put the 2gigs back in until you've installed SP1.

Also a black screen is normal and sometimes can take up to 20 minutes. Let it sit for around 20 minutes and if it still doesn't go then try the ram thing.

I will try that. I have 64-bit vista though. I thought that was only a problem on 32-bit vista and XP.

I am also using my laptop to greate a custom vista disk with Vlite.

Your problem is most likely vlite.. I had major issues with it... It caused way to many errors even with minor issues and I just stopped using it.

4GB of ram issue is with both 32bit and 64bit.

I actually did not use V-lite to create the first disk. It was the OEM Microsoft disk.

Just an update. I get a black screen with only a mouse cursor which stays for about a minute then the system reboots.

You're doing a clean install with an upgrade disk?...wouldnt you have to be upgrading from a current install of XP?

When you upgrade wth Vista. It does a fresh install and places the xp in a window.old folder.

So, an upgrade disk can install Vista on a new partition as well as upgrade a partition with XP already on it?

I dont believe so, but create a new partion with the XP trial that should be on the disk, then you can upgrade from there, in essence creating a vista partion.
