Can't Format!?

post #1 of 35
Thread Starter
I tried right clicking on the drive in 'My Computer' and clicking 'Format' and it gets to the end and says that Windows was unable to format the drive.

I've tried formatting it with the Windows CD and it says;

"Windows Set Up could not reinitialize the development engine. To install Windows, Restart the instillation."

I also noticed, that when I was trying to format through the Windows CD, there was my 120GB WD HDD (which I don't want to format), my 500GB Seagate HDD (the one I'm trying to format) and an 8MB Partition. I didn't create the partition though, is this why I can't format?

What can I do!?

I'm just Formatting it through 'Computer Management' now, Hoping it'll work!

It's at 3%, It'll take a while, eh.

right click on my computer and select manage.
then choose disk management

Your first step to try and fix this would be to repartition. Go to control panel -> administrative tools -> computer management -> disk management. Delete all partitions on the disk and create what you need. It may be that your partition table got screwed up and started referencing data that doesn't exist. So when windows tried to access that data, it got screwed.

The 8mb is normal, windows leaves it there as extra space in case you decide to convert to dynamic disks later (which is nothing but software raid). You can do what you want with it, won't make the slightest difference.

EDIT: Don't bother formatting like that, just do a quick format!

Ok, I stopped the Format...

I have it set to;

'NTFS', and 'Default' Allocation Unit Size.

I tried Quick Format and it says; "The Format Did Not Complete Successfully."

I noticed that my 'File System' for my WD120GB is NTFS. The Seagate 500GB is RAW.

This is bugging me, I can't use my new drive!

I tried that through 'My Computer' and right Clicking 'Format' there. It didn't work...

I'll try it though 'Computer Management' now.
