not at all. Both PCI-Express slots are 16x, that's all you have to worry about.

PCI-E 2.0 is a big marketing scheme that has no real world benefits yet.(check this thread for more info)

@wildfire99, Wow! Thank you so much for all that great info. It's awesome to have someone else that seems to be looking for a similar build to get some information from.

I really like the look of the 1200, though it does cost a lot. I'll keep an eye out for anything new!

I'll take a look at the other power supply. The PCP&C power supply I seemed to get great reviews despite it possibly being a bit loud!

I'll definitely put some more thought into the processor to make sure I get what I want. The consensus seems to be that the 9450s are a good choice. The new 45nm processors coming out later, will they require a new mobo than the 780i or 750i FTW?

Also, what is a lapping kit? I have no idea. >_<

What is the "step-up" program? I've never heard of that.

Good find on the sound card, that's a big price difference, but I've heard enough bad news about Creative's drivers to be interested in looking elsewhere.

I thought SLI doesn't have multi-monitor support? But I'll look into a smaller monitor with a faster response time!

I think you misread, I changed from AS5 to MX-2, I'm hearing that MX-2 will cool slightly better and costs a tiny bit more.

Again, thanks a ton for all your great input! I'd love to keep in touch and hear how your build is coming along as well.

@Microsis, thanks for clearing that up!

@Sonic, any reason for choosing DDR2 1000 over DDR 1066 other than price? That really isn't a big difference in price considering the overall cost of the computer, so I don't mind the extra $60 if there will be a noticeable difference in speed.

Also, that Samsung is nice (and has a lower response time) with a lower price tag... I'll have to do some more research.

Lapping is smoothing the CPU and/or HeatSynk to make it uniform and smooth so it better dissipates heat.

No problem on the post it took a lil to write but ive gotten so much help from this community it only feels right to help those in need.

I'll take a look at the other power supply. The PCP&C power supply I seemed to get great reviews despite it possibly being a bit loud! -it is a great power supply but the corsair is literaly almost the exact same psu(made by the same company seasonic[i think]) and the corsair actualy costs less.

I'll definitely put some more thought into the processor to make sure I get what I want. The consensus seems to be that the 9450s are a good choice. The new 45nm processors coming out later, will they require a new mobo than the 780i or 750i FTW? the new ones will require a different motherboard and i think it is a good idea to do some personal research on the cpu as the 100 bucks isnt money to be spent lightly and its good to know why your making a decision rather than assume others are right

Also, what is a lapping kit? I have no idea. >_< -lapping is flattening a connection between the cpu and hsf to create a better thermal connectivity and reduce temps

What is the "step-up" program? I've never heard of that. -i explained the step up program in my last post just reread

Good find on the sound card, that's a big price difference, but I've heard enough bad news about Creative's drivers to be interested in looking elsewhere. -i beleive its worth the price difference as its a much better sound card especialy if your buying speakers of that caliber.

I thought SLI doesn't have multi-monitor support? But I'll look into a smaller monitor with a faster response time! -you can switch your setup between sli and multi moniter(1 card per moniter) with a program so you can sli while your gaming and then multi moniter when your doing research or going on the web and such, you could even watch two different pron videos at once ^_*

I think you misread, I changed from AS5 to MX-2, I'm hearing that MX-2 will cool slightly better and costs a tiny bit more. -both are good the AS5 gets better temps after its settled well argueable go with either youll be happy.

Again, thanks a ton for all your great input! I'd love to keep in touch and hear how your build is coming along as well. -i am going to start a build log once i start ordering parts going to do some severe modifications to case if i can scrounge up time, expect it to start in the next 2 months as money becomes available.

Also, that Samsung is nice (and has a lower response time) with a lower price tag... I'll have to do some more research -yep go with a samsung and you wont regret it really any of them works with 2ms response time and the 24"ers are not worth the price difference over 22"ers.

Again thanks so much for all the great help. I'm working on a revised list at the moment. However, I'm wondering if I should even bother with a cpu cooler? Is it really necessary? I guess it would help future proof the system a bit more with the new processors coming out later this year... Hrmm.

Yes, deffinitlya stock cooler for a quadcore is a joke. if you dont want to buy a tuniq tower at least get a alright third party cooler.

My $.02:

PSU, go with this Silverstone Strider 750W, it's made to be real silent, modular, and reliable. I personally have the 650W Decathlon, and it's super quiet too. You might want to shop around for prices, too, I just pasted from newegg. Although $150's not bad at all for such a great PSU. I think I'm stuck on Silverstone PSU's for life after having owned one. Granted I upgraded from an Ultra V 500W, lol.

HDD, go with this Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 750GB 32MB Cache for $130 each at three times the storage and two times the cache. It would be well worth the money, IMO.

Good choice on the processor. 45nm is great foresight IMO. I'm personally holding out for the QX9770 to come down from it's $1500 throne, lol. Maybe if it ever gets close to $500, I'll reach out my net made of gold and grab one.

Cases, look at Lian Li before you decide on anything else, or even maybe the Silverstone Temjin series. (I'm having a TJ07 custom modded for me, it's gonna be SWEET! I'm going to make such a big deal about it on this site once it finally arrives!)

Tuniq Tower's are awesome, but I'm a Thermalright guy, so I have to interject the TRUE. Excellent cooling performance, and it appears to be a tad smaller. Plus I like the chromed out look over the black top on the Tuniq. Aesthetics aside, I think you'll get relatively similar performance out of either, especially after lapping, within a couple of degrees. So just go with whatever tickles your fancy.

Memory, yes, consider the 1066 truly "future proof." It really will last you a little longer, that is, until DDR3 takes over the world. MWA-HA-HA!!!

Other than that, it all looks good. Post some pics when you get it all? How soon do you plan on buying?

Thanks for all the great info so far... sorry for the delay in my response! I've been hard at work creating a revised list. The OP has been updated to reflect where I stand now...

Quote:
Case
Antec Twelve Hundred Black ATX Full Tower$179.99
Sticking with the Twelve Hundred. Will just have to be wary about the dust! It's much bigger than what I need, but I guess it'll make building easier.

Power Supply
Corsair TX 750W ATX 12V Power Supply - CMPSU-750TX$94.99
Will the Corsair TX 750W be powerful enough to power this build with room for growth?

Processor
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 Yorkfield 2.66GHz$299.99
Sticking with the 9450 so I can be ready when more games support quad-core and I won't have to worry about upgrading. Plus, I found a great deal via microcenter (only $300!).

Processor Cooling
Tuniq Tower 120 P4 & K8 CPU Cooler$49.99
Tuniq Tower since it comes with a fan so I won't have to worry about that, it has good reviews and a lot of support here, and looks cool. I don't really need the extra degrees since I'm not THAT hardcore leet, haha.

Motherboard
EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard$239.99
780i mobo I'm stilling researching... While I have no intent to go Tri-SLI, I am finding better reviews on the 780i boards than the 750i boards. Will keep looking and am still open to opinions!

Video Card(s)
2x -- EVGA 512-P3-N841-AR GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP SLI$449.98
8800GTS G92 seems to be the sweet spot. I'm still debating whether to get one now and wait, or go for it and build an SLI rig.

Memory
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit$144.99
Upgraded to 1066.

Optical Drive(s)
ASUS Black 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA DVD-ROM Drive$20.99
SAMSUNG SH-S203N DVD Burder$28.99
Not much to say… went by Newegg reviews.

Int. Hard Drive
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s$99.99
I'm still debating with the hard drives... after more research I'm still hungry for a (veloci)raptor. The speed increase just seems too great to ignore. It's a lot more expensive though. But I just don't have a need for that much space. Still open to ideas.

Sound Card
AuzenTech Auzen X-Fi Prelude 7.1 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface$174.99
The prelude seems to be the way to go for good gaming, movies, and music all in one. If I'm spitting out $270 for a 5.1 system, may as well get a good sound card. I'm assuming it works well with vista.

Monitor
SAMSUNG 2493HM Glossy Black 24" 5ms DVI HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor$479.99
Still researching monitors, it doesn't seem like there is any outstanding 24" monitor at the moment. >_< May have to settle for a 22" unless I can justify jumping to 27".

Accessories
Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound$6.99
Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard$79.99
Logitech Z-5500 505W 5.1 Speakers$267.99
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium x64$--.--
Microsoft Office Small Business 2007$--.--

Grand Total:$2,919.84
Thoughts?
