Help needed choosing headphones/amps

Thread Starter
So i want to upgrade my personal audio setup on my comp as everyone complains when i start blowing out KMFDM at 3am (cant see whats wrong with that lol)

Im currently using a pair of Sennheiser CX300's plugged into my volume control for my X-540's which tbh is pretty rubbish.

So ive got about $300 to spend on a new pair of headphones and amp (if needed) but im not really up-to-date in the audio side of the world and so as you probably guessed i need some help choosing some with 1or2 questions:

Is a headphone amp necessary and if so, how do i know which headphones require an amp????

Will my Xtremegamer be ok as an output or are they slightly lacking on the audio quality side of things considering i want to continue to play games on here.

I take it the headphone amp can be plugged directly into the optical output on my soundcard or am i mis-informed here????

ty in advance

Pretty Much headphone amps are not needed on every headphone however they do improve sound quality by a fair margin.

The Extreme gamer is decent however if i was you to start i would go with the Auzentech Prelude + Alessandro MS-1

I can tell you know the MS1 is a great sounding headphone and easy to drive.

The MS-1 are $99 and the Auzentech Prelude is around 170 .

Links for the products.

And at a later stage you could add on a Small amp just to drive them a little better.

To connect say the Prelude to a Amp you would need a 3.5 to RCA cable .

IMO the XtremeGamer is a fine card, equal in performance to a stock XtremeMusic. Although as benny stated the Prelude is better overall in soundcards, but not necessarily needed...

If you wanted to spend the entire $300 on a good set of headphones here are my suggestions:

HD650s
A900s
AD900s

And thats about all I would suggest un-amped...

now if you split the costs and got a set of cans and an amp then
DT770 pro80s
and a mini^3 you'll have to contact someone to build it for you, like MisterX or build it yourself. Builders List
