"SLI Ready" needed for sli/sli mobo?

Thread Starter
Hello,
I am having troubles with my system freezing up randomly and reading other threads where people have had similar problems, users have usually suggested memory as the culprit.
My question is this: I am running a 790i SLI ultra board (but not running sli at the moment), but NOT running "sli certified" ram. (OCZ DDR3 1600mhz).
Is it the case that non sli ram is not compatible whatsoever? Or like the power supplies where sli ready means that it will for sure run it, and if it isn't sli ready than it will probably run it?
Thank you

you dont need sli ram. any ram that your board supports is fine. i have a evga 680i a1 sli board, and was running OCZ sli memory, i never put the memory in sli configuration, then i went and upgraded to the Gskills in my sig, so no, you dont need sli ram for a sli board.

Thank you, that is what I thought.
But also, what is "sli memory configuration"?

SLI memory = EPP memory

EPP Memory is SPD configurations over JEDEC specs.

SPD is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_Presence_Detect

What would happen if one uses memory that isn't "compatible" with a motherboard? (type and specs within the limits, but not on the list)

The computer wouldnt boot and/or fry the mobo and/or ram.

If your computer is booting your ram works with your motherboard, however the ram itself may be unstable due to lack of voltages or just faulty.

Okay, so I shouldn't be worried that my ram isn't found on the list of approved memory if I've gotten this far?

OCZ's "SLI Ready" ram is just a marketing gimmick between nvidia and OCZ, I ran the "ATI Crossfire" OCZ ram in my nvidia motherboard =)

Non the less it is good memory

I run mine at 5-4-4-15 2T @ 850mhz 2.1v
