comment on my new rig

Thread Starter
ive been doing research for the past few days. my plan is to build a semi upgradeable computer that will be entirely from newegg (dont mind spending a few extra to keep it at newegg). im a 3rd year computer science major so im not the best with hardware but i'll know what your talking about. i am an avid gamer and plan on playing AoC (age of conan). any feedback will be much appreciated!

i already have vista 64bit business, 2 monitors, a HD, Audigy soundcard, and all the extra peripherals.

* i plan on eventually upgrading to 8gigs ram, and SLIing with another 8800GTS
**eventually i will overclock to 3.4ish on the Q6700

the rig right now is about $1200 + rebates, please leave any comments you have

Case: Antec Nine Hundred
Mobo: EVGA 750i FTW
GPU: EVGA 8800GTS
PSU: Corsair 750W
CPU: Q6700*
RAM: G.SKILL DDR2 1000*
DVD Drive: Samsung 20x
Heatsink: Zalman 9700*
120mm Fan: Antec

Seems like a pretty good build to me, but is 750w of power really needed for that rig? Perhaps you could save money with a 500-600w one?

The corsair TX750w is cheaper @ Provantage & buy.com ~$95 after rebate at both.

im horrible with wattage and such, but i was trying to be a little generous considering i will be SLIing and OCing eventually. do you still think 750w is not reasonable?

The TX750 is a good choice. You won't regret it. But, do get it at elsewhere as stated above.

Save some money on the RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=0&srchInDesc=
Not much difference between DDR2 1066 and DDR2 1000, except the price

At this moment, I highly recommend to get a Q6700. Yes, it's a little more money, but the current bins of Q6600's aren't very overclock friendly (I've heard people having trouble with 3.2GHz), while the Q6700 is still a great overclocker. Savings on RAM and PSU will allow the Q6700 to fit right in the budget.

For OC'ing I've heard to stay in the 550W - 600W range just to be safe. SLI im not too sure about but 750W seems reasonable to me. My Corsair 550VX cost $99 off newegg so for 200W more for cheaper, go all for it!

Looks like a damn fine rig to me. It cost the same as mine in sig.

What about between DDR2 800 and DDR2 1000/1066?

You should get the G.Skill 2x2GB DDR2 1000mhz, it's only $85. Also, you want the Ultra 120 eXtreme, not the ultra 120, Directron has it @ $55. If you get the TRUE, get a Scythe Ultra Kaze for it. Lastly, if you get the aftermarket cooler you can get the OEM Q6600 @ microcenter for $186 shipped.

so dropping the memory down to DDR2 1000, and shopping else ware to upgrade my CPU to Q6700 is a great idea.
