well to be honest i believe it to be the opposite of that. I have had my spare 360 RMAd three times in 9 months after which i did the X-clamp method and has been working like a charm ever since. i even bought a 360 from ebay that had gotten the red ring of death and fixed it with the X-clamp method. So i personally would suggest you to do the X-clamp method which is very easy took me maybe 30 mins-45 mins including the complete disassembly of the xbox. it is kinda helpful to have a helping set of hands but it is not required. and I would suggest for you to go with a nut then three metal washers and one nylon washer then place the mother board on it and then a metal and then a nylon washer and then place the heatsink on top and screw it in. worked brilliantly for me and here is a nice little tutorial for you:
RJB's X clamp or the llamma X clamp method

have fun

^^^ yup.

I prefer RBJTech over Llama though. Neither say to "cook" it post fix, but I've found it really adds to the stability, possibly because it reflows hairline solder cracks, but that's somewhat of a magic beans argument.
