Help! I'm Going Crazy With My Intel Processor.

I hope I'm posting this in the correct spot.

Anway, I need some serious help with my computer. Many of my programs are running slow and it's driving me crazy. When I'm using a program like Limewire to download music, it takes approximately 5-10 minutes to completely get one music track. When comparing to my friends, it takes them only 1-2 minutes at the longest for each track. When it comes to being on websites like Myspace.com, the slowness really begins to show itself. When I'm trying to view profiles with a lot of media on it, I have to wait at least 10 minutes for it to load completely. Sometimes it takes so long that I'm thinking that my computer has froze all together. Once again, when comparing performance to my friends, everything loads up in a matter of seconds.

Knowing that I have the same internet connection speed (DSL), one friend suggested that I check for viruses and spyware.... and also do defragment. I've done all of those and still nothing changed. Afterwards I figured that maybe my processor spec is greatly different from that of my friends. I received the spec info from all my friends' processor and noticed there is a huge difference.

My computer (desktop) being over eight years old has an Intel Inside Celeron processor @ 531 MHz and 64MB of RAM (yeah....I said megabytes, lol). Three of my friends have newer desktop and/or laptops. Friend #1 has an Intel Pentium Dual-Core @ 1.66 GHz and 2 GB or RAM; friend #2 has the same processor as #1 @ 1.6 GHz and 1 GB of RAM. Both use laptops. Friend #3 uses a desktop, though I forgot the exact name of her Intel processor, it running on 1.3 GHz and 0.51 GB of RAM. Hopefully that info helps.

I would hate to get rid of this computer, but if there's no other option for me then I guess I have no choice. Basically, I'm wondering what are my options for possibly improving the performance of my computer? I'm wondering is the processor and RAM the real issue or is it more? If there's hope for this computer, I'm wondering if something can be done for under $300?

I'm not sure if I have enough specs listed for you all and unfortunately, I wouldn't know how to go about check info, like the motherboard for example. If you need more info about my computer, then I'll simply comeback later once I get help in retreiving the info.

Thanks!

Woody

Could you do a speedtest.net test so we can see for sure it's not your internet?

RAM is part of the issue.
The entire thing is rather old to run XP well.
You would be amazed what a power house you can build on the cheap these days!

Well, after several minutes of waiting for the site to load, here are the results:

Download speed - 893 kb/s
Upload speed - 378 kb/s
Ping: 90ms

I'm not sure if that's good, decent or bad.

Hmm. I would suggest you try a hardware identifying utility like Sandra to find out about your motherboard. Perhaps it can handle more memory and a better CPU... a little better at least. You mentioned $300 as a budget- Dell has (or had) good entry level systems for around $350- I suggest you look into them.

And it's not your internet speed, I use dial up and get at best 55kbps, sites like overclock load up within seconds.

Heck you could build a pretty decent system for cheap... and compared to what your running atm it will be like you just built a god of a machine
